It's a sharp s, to distinguish it from the soft s in certain situations. It's called the 'Eszett', or 'sz'.

I'm going to do the smart thing here and disengage. This isn't a hill I paticularly care to die on.

It looks like a B. Why is it an S? Why not just use an S?

It's an eszett. It separates words with short 's' sounds from those with long 's' sounds. Because Germany.

yea, you are just making things too complex. You just need to use an s from now on. This needs to stop.

US States Quiz

Europe Countries Quiz

Do both and report back with score. Go go. :P

I got 93% on Europe because I mixed Estonia up with Latvia (and pressed the wrong one twice because I was being silly) then accidentally pressed Monaco when I meant Liechtenstein. I am atrocious at America. I got stuck in the South because I couldn't work out where Georgia was and gave up. I knew where North Carolina was though, and South Carolina by extension but only because of the influence of MetalSlimeHunt and RedKing.

yea but german and spanish it's literall all the nouns. I actually hear cultures that do that are inherently more sexist. Because, usually, the feminine words are used for things that are weak.

USA - You scored 8/50 = 16%.

Europe - You scored 27/45 = 60%.

i h8 u east europe :P

50/50 U.S. states.

40/45 Europe.  Damn Balkans.  Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia, and Slovenia tripped me up.  I had no trouble with the Baltic states thanks to Europa Universalis.  Lithuania has to be near Poland, otherwise the Polish-Lithuanianan Commonwealth would not exist.

Yeah, no, that's... not true.
As far as I can tell they're totally arbitrary.

Boats and spaceships are also traditionally regarded as female.

In Gaelic the word for "fray of battle" or struggle/conflict is feminine. So are the words for helmet, shield, axe, dirk/dagger/bayonet, blade, knife, musket... I'm afraid sword and gun are masculine though. Gender varies greatly between islands and regions - the gender of the word Gaelic as in the name of the language or "Gàidhlig" for instance varies depending on what island/glen/region you're from. If you're from one island you may say it's feminine, from another masculine and so on.

English grammar makes no sense though. At least with other languages there's more even rules about what goes where.

I'd argue against the point you made about gendered language countries being more inherently sexist. German, Icelandic, Finnish, Norwegian etc all have grammatical genders in their language yet they're considered some of the least sexist countries. Conversely Turkey, USA, Japan etc don't have gendered language but are more sexist in their culture.

Fair enough. But also, no one said a language has to make sense. We just have a more complex and diverse (see: we stole half our words from other languages) vocabulary.
