My mum asked me, out of mild curiosity, what I was writing out. I told her I was in an online discussion on religion, and both her and my dad lectured me on how I should never express opinion online, do they know where you live, and, to quote, "there are computer nerds out there that will track your IP back if you post something they don't like."

They were only being concerned, but slightly annoying that they kept coming back to it. Suppose the side of the argument I was holding up didn't impress them much either, but I only told them the bare bones of that.

Have you told them you were debating a German? A Catholic German?

I should really get an Armalite from somewhere, just to mention that I have one in this kind of situation...

Then you get cities like Paris where you should basically just kill yourself already.

You won’t have to think anymore: it’ll be just like having fun!

Hrm. I did. They were not pleased. "Are these people the same age as you? Where do they live? Is this an intelligent discussion, not people throwing swears at each other?"
Me: Have you ever known me to swear? Why should I engage in a debate with only curses hurled everywhere?

As for Armalite...Helgo, they weren't impressed with the Catholic bit. They would not be...appreciative...of that kind of reference :P

As for me, it's fine! Just don't combine it with a ballot box :P

The only Armalite I know of is the firearms manufacturer that invented the M-16 rifle and is the primary seller of civilian models.

Guns used by IRA.

"The armalite and ballot box" strategy was used to kill, then have the murderers elected in by the Catholic community.
Edit: A quote from Danny Morrison, Sinn Fein organiser, at its annual conference: "Who here really believes we can win the war through the ballot box? But will anyone here object if, with a ballot paper in this hand and an Armalite in the other, we take power in Ireland?"

Hence Helgo, as a Catholic, possessing one would be...rude :P

oh yea, I heard something about all that. Apparently the protestants were kind of being jerks, as well.

I don't know what happens over there. It's not relevant, I mean it's not happening here, in a country packed to the brim with American Exceptionalism.

That's right, the neo-cons invented us our own damn word for just how much better we are than everyone else.

Plus, you are all socialists.

In wars, everyone is a jerk.

Not gonna talk about this though, I already feel drained enough without another bout of Lyeos and assorted others shouting "Irish!" at me.

I would have thought that would have all been at least smoothed over some by now.

I don't know, us Americans all hold hands and unite over any injustice, as you may have noticed.

They certainly were.

I'm opening a pandora's box here (better suited to the Euro thread) but I should say that the IRA actually grew out of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. It is a little known fact that the vast, vast majority of native Irish Catholics in Northern Ireland were prohibited from voting by the Protestants until the latter part of the 20th century; Catholics also faced serious problems with discrimination in employment and while seeking jobs from the Protestant ruling class and also police brutality from a virtually 100% Protestant police force. All these problems arise from the fact that, like Apartheid South Africa was a country for the Afrikaners, Northern Ireland in the 20th century was a statelet specially created for the Protestant Ulstermen by the British Government. Nowadays this is not the case at all. But yeah the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association eventually ended up collapsing under the weight of extreme sectarian tension between the Catholic protestors and Protestant counter protestors and the police and the British government and morphed into the Provisional IRA etc.

I would have thought that would have all been at least smoothed over some by now.

I don't know, us Americans all hold hands and unite over any injustice, as you may have noticed.

The troubles in Northern Ireland go back 500 years involving the delightfully inflammatory touchstones of genocide, ethnic cleansing and colonialism so they're not going to go away any time soon. But yes, if you wish to discuss this further, please join us in the Euro thread.
