Hopefully my family will stop being derps and take it without me having to say something.
If that were going to happen, it would have happened before its face started falling off.

Say something. Please.

Also, I'm not sure if my lab partner is just significantly less competent than me, or if he just gives this few fucks, but I'm pretty definitely pulling most of the weight here. The class has a mechanism to deal with unequal effort, but the problem is that it strongly incentivizes assigning everybody a fair share - they just linearly scale your grade to the effort rating the group gives you, but since you can't do better than if everybody did an equal amount, it's purely a mechanism to punish people, and I really don't care enough to hurt somebody if it doesn't benefit me in some way. It's pretty clear at this point that it's not going to get him to work harder, anyway.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Yes, please say something. Even better, if at all possible, do something- see if there are emergency animal care/protection services in your area. A larva growing underneath an animal's skin definitely qualifies as an Serious Problem, especially if the larva has since hatched and taken a chunk of flesh with it.

Was just informed by a coworker that another coworker who retired passed away yesterday randomly. She wasn't that old, and she really helped me transition in to my current role, so I worked beside her quite a bit.

Retirement, sadly, often comes with random death within a few months. Maybe not often, but it's a noticeable occurrence.
