This happened in dwarf fortress:

An infant is lying dead in a pool of it's own blood, and it's mother, a macedwarf, is trying to find it. It's especially sad, because the mother hasn't eaten or drank anything or gotten any sleep since the baby went missing.

And it's lying just a few steps away from where she's searching.
It's like she's seen it, deep down she knows it's there, but she's still desperately denying it, holding onto some frayed thread of false hope.
"That's not my baby... no no no, that can't be my baby, it just can't..."

From my observation, hysterical people are always funny out of context. It's when there is context that they become serious.

Sat down to play some Dark Souls co-op last night and the Internet went down.

For 12 hours.

...That feeling when you go "It's okay, there's 20 other fun things I can do to pass the time instead!" and then mentally run down the list and realize 100% of them require Internet access in some form.

Ha. When the power goes out, it's something along the lines of "Oh, my internet and computer won't work. Well, I'll watch T.V. to pass the...

It occurs to me now that changing my username has pretty much wiped clean the rapport I've gained on this forum over the years, especially now that my avatar has changed too. It was a good decision to me, but I guess I have to work my way up from being a stranger all over again ^^

A fairly distant relative who I've never met is apparently cutting herself. I've met and liked her grandmother, and we're going over to visit the grandmother next week while we're in the area. She also took an over dose of something, and both of these in the last week. It's rather depressing that people do this not only to themselves, but also to their family. The grandmother is both terrified and extremely upset.

Given the >1000 posts, I'm inclined to believe she went with the Toadly Intervention strategy. Too bad I still remember her, although it did require this conversation for me to recognize that I did :P

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Wow, that's weird. I'd caught myself a few times thinking "Oh hey it's Flandre," then doing a double-take and realising it was, in fact, some new person called Reverie. :P NOW IT MAKES SENSE! I WASN'T GOING CRAZY AFTER ALL.
Guess I should call the institute and cancel my three o'clock admission...

Toady was just nice enough to change my username for me. Starting a new account just for my name wasn't worth losing my forum history over, so I am extra-thankful for his kindness.
