Without context, I assume this is a generality?
Yeah, it is.

Mm...Well in that case, I hope you're doing alright there anyway. :)

Though that kind of generality might be a bit...narrow, considering the forum populace/personality as a whole.

No matter how I try, I shall never think of anything as cool as this in any sci-fi I write

It's world building. ;-;
You have my attention. If you do stick it up, I'll happily read through it. Worldbuilding is actually my favourite bit of literature, so yeah :P

I prefer to think of it as a monorail, really. Only one track you're meant to follow, but often above the ground so as to increase derail casualties.

Is this comment a derail? I've ceased to be able to tell the difference.  :P

I like to think the lower boards as one big derail.
Big and entertaining derail that often needs lube.

occasional circle-jerks
Greatorder, you understate things.
It is at least once a week I quietly am irritated at a circlejerk.

Have I mentioned how much I hate all of you in the last week?

Probably.

I can't tell if that's a joke or serious.

I'm not sure how to feel about that.

The wriggling avatar was a funny joke, but keeping these things for longer than a day is kinda super annoying. It reminds me of that suggestion game where the author had a breakdown because of all the penguin avatars.

Don't worry about it. The initial fad has almost run its course. Most people are switching back, shelving it in a rotation, or just being lazy and not really devoted. The people really devoted to the joke will probably take it to another, but far less widespread, level.
