What are you talking about? Deerflies are uncommon. But their bites are something feirce because of poison. They swell up about as much as a brown recluses bite.

Huh. Never had an issue with fleas or ticks. I've been bitten by four leeches at once though. Moral of the story: wet undergrowth = bad to shuffle through.

Oh man... when I was about that age, I was deconstructing a screen-tent in the back yard, with hollow support-poles. Apparently ants had built a colony inside the legs, and when I took one of the legs apart, I got a face full of ants and ant larva. Mouth, nose, ears, eyes, you name it.

To this day, I spit reflexively whenever I see an insect larva. And pretty much whenever something grosses me out.
