Got an Idea. Try to steal it and I'll find you....
Make a secure website where people can have references from old landlords so when they go to rent a place, there's a string of people saying they're legit within easy reach.  If you want a landlord to see your secure reference information, then you email the site for a secure password that is only good for two months. After two months it changes and you have to request a new one. The site shows reference letters you put up from previous landlords and has a special sections for pets to show how well behaved they are. This works to the advantage of both landlords and tenants.

Take out a small loan, buy any of the glut of houses on the market right now, and make use of them by renting them out, becoming a landlord with something along the lines of your earlier idea. Then use the proceeds not being used to pay for the house to create the "Rate My Tenant" website for use in your property. Once it proves itself successful, you can market the website as an alternative to the expensive credit history reports and such. I'm a decent and respectful guy, but having refused to own or buy on credit has left me with pretty lukewarm credit, making it tough to get a place as it sits. I can only imagine there are other people in my boat, and such a system would be doing a huge service, and heck... an accessible personal reference web business might do some serious good in helping good, responsible people get out of poverty.

Every moment delayed is a moment one of us basterds could steal it. :P You see what I did thar?

On a more serious note, relationships and becoming a part of relationships are just stressing me out lately. I know I'm worthy of being in a relationship and all that jazz, but I also still have those lurking self esteem issues hiding under the surface with the ghosts of girls past egging them on like some kind of self hate clique in my brain.
And then there is the fact that I know when I get hurt in a relationship, I turn into a psychopath. It isn't pretty. I get hurt, then I decide I should hurt them, then we've got some kind of hideous tantrum spiral going on between two people, and eventually it ends up with them gone (Literally, gone. I am so bad as to make exs move away. AWAY away. I do not have an ex within 100 miles AT LEAST.) and everyone that was party to the whole deal thinking I'm a fucking lunatic. Which is half true, I AM a lunatic.
Lately I've tried warning people who want to get involved with me that I'm pretty much a crazy landmine, but they're all, "You can't be that bad!" or "I won't hurt you, I'd never hurt you!".
Adding to some of this stress, I never like someone who isn't my friend. I may think someone is cute, but I won't be willing (at all. Not an option) to date or whatever you want to call it unless we've been friends for awhile first. Most people think this is 'wrong' but I honestly believe you have to be friends before you can be lovers. I've tried the jumping into bed thing. She had to move back to Iowa. So. That's a no go. The side effect of this is that now I only have one friend, and he's a guy, and I don't roll that way.
All in all, this is a trememdous improvement over last year.  ::)

what happened to her?

I also miss GlyphGlyph...
She's taking a lot of time off, and very rarely pops in for like, three minutes at a time to let us know that she's not dead yet.
Self-improvement sabbatical, is my understanding.
Yeah, although it's kind of looking like a semi-permanent thing. She said she might come round at the end of the summer to say hello one last time before she's off, not entirely sure if that's actually going to happen though.

But you know, whatever makes her happy and helps her in the end.

Yeah, I don't think she's ever coming back for more than a short period here and there.  I miss her too.  One of the most memorable people I've met in my 16 years online.

I'm having trouble even finishing this issue.  You've done a lot of shocking stuff, but nothing that's come even close to hitting me like this.  You better have a satisfying as hell ending in the works for this new big bad.  I don't even know what else to say.  Fuuuuuuck :(

Gosh. I've only read up to issue 24 or so. :P Now I'm gonna have to keep reading to find out just what you're on about...

I'll just say that Kirkman knows how to cut deep, and doesn't hesitate to do so when it serves a purpose in his story.  He's lost hundreds, if not thousands of readers by violating their sensibilities (pay attention to his letters column...).  I'm not a soft reader.  He's shocked me before, but always in a way that left me appreciating his boldness, not in a way that I felt crossed a line.  This event left me conflicted and bitter.

The worst part is I can't disagree with it.  I completely understand why he did this.  It's excellent writing on many levels.  This event just takes us soooooooo very far from the kind of stories our culture is accustomed to.

This issue had one very distinct point, and he was very direct about it, to the point that the villain's monologue was almost a fourth wall break.  The Walking Dead is not about entertainment.  It's about facing reality.

We are so accustomed to stories that fudge reality, even if just a little, to make it a positive experience for the audience.  Even stories that feign brutality, like so many war movies or torture porns, do so in a way that is somehow romanticized.  Violent actions by protagonists are justified, and when they're not it's so the protagonist can learn some moral lesson.  Characters are usually granted closure before they're killed off and/or they're celebrated one last time with a cool moment.  Even the most "real" death moments in media that I can think of that do neither of the aforementioned things will at least grant the audience catharsis by having another protagonist enter veangeful berserker mode.  Even if said berserker mode amounts to nothing, it is a form of vindication as the audience gets to share in that portrayed anger and sadness.  In one way or another, death is always granted some form of meaning.  Your Saw-style torture porns attempt to subvert this by making death random and cruel, but even here writers take care to make the portrayal emotionally muted/distorted and the circumstances so unrealistic and cartoonishly forced that death doesn't have a real impact on the viewer.  Here the romanticization takes the form of desentization and marginalization of our own mortality.

I feel like Kirkman's doing something completely different here.  Unique.  I cannot think of a single other story that handles mortality like this.  The deaths that take place in this story have no meaning.  Nothing is romanticized.  Nothing is vindicated.  Things just happen... not without reason, of course, but those reasons are not rooted in audience vindication.  We follow these characters lives as they experience joy and fear and everything in-between.  We watch some get tough and others crack and wither.  We watch like-able characters change into disturbing characters.  When someone dies, we feel just as powerless and empty as they do.

It was the most real thing I've ever seen.  Kirkman has somewhat eased us up to this point.  The story has gradually built up to this level of harsh neutrality, but it's quite clear that the build-up is done.  This character's death signifies the very end of innocence in this world and the audience-handling gloves completely removed.  If anything was previously written to cater to the audience's sensibilities or fragile need for a story to grant meaning to any notion of mortality, I get the feeling that practice is completely ended.  This is a world where nothing happens for a "reason" in the sense that we're used to.  Violence is justified only by survival, and not romanticized at all.  This is a story where we like the characters who are still alive because we know them and how they got to where they are, not because they stand on some higher moral ground then their enemies.

Fuck, what a rant.  It's just a comic book, right?  I suppose being the best-selling single issue of a comic series since 1997, it's got to be something of a nature that's worth talking about...

I have noticed that the 6' tall built like treetrunks could kill you with an eyelash people I know tend to be the nicest folks.

I could be one of those folks, but I'm 5'11" and middlingly built.

A history teacher at my school is one of the nicest men I know. He is also one of the best practioners of taekwondo in South Australia (possibly Australia). He could concievably kill everyone in any room he's in. He's also like sixty and wont stop smiling. One sec: Rule One states "Do not act incautiously when confronting little bald wrinkly smiling men".
He's all but one: wrinkly. In five years he'll be that too.

I had a similarly awesome Judo teacher once. He looked like he was about 100 years old, and he was insanely nice, but he had the third red/white Judo belt (better than all 10 black belts), and if he ever got his hands on you, you could as well be unconscious, because it wouldn't have an effect on your motions. He loved to blow into people's eyes, and when they opened them again, they would be lying on their backs with him on top, unable to escape.

My Ninjutsu sensei was in his late 80s when I started training with him. He walked with a cane and a limp, apparently from taking shrapnel to his leg from an explosion on a ship in WW2. I met him by trying to stop a mugging on what I thought was a helpless old man, and by the time I got within arm's length, he had dispatched 4 armed goons. Two of them were armed with pistols, two with knives. I brain-boggled, and he asked me if I wanted to know his secrets. Hell yes, I did. He beat me into the ground, told me to show up next week, and I got the best damn training I've ever had. In a park.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Nah. I did less waxing on and waxing off and spent more time tasting dirt and concrete, and trying to escape armbars and being choked with things.
