My dad comes out ahead almost every time he goes to a casino. I went with him one time, and he came out five minutes later and $300 richer. Some people seem uncanny at beating the odds, no matter how mathematically unlikely.
My brother is like that. We'll both go in holding $20. Within an hour, I'll be broke, and he'll have $100.
seems there are a few of us that defy the laws of mathematics.
Or are secretly counting cards. Its damn difficult by the way.
Especially on slot machines. :P

Slot machines are always curved against you, the slots are either fixed so that they never pay out more money than they get, or they simply use a random number generator and rely on the fact that it's statistically unlikely for them to pay out more than they get.
Roulette is also curved against you, the double zero means that the payout from your bets will not match your probability of winning.
Blackjack is... complicated, there's a lot of different rule sets that different casinos use, but usually the rules are made so that it's not actually possible to win money in the long run.

Poker is the only classic casino game I know of where it's actually reasonably possible to make money, but that's only because you're playing against other players, and most people who get drunk and play poker don't know how to play poker and win money, so it can actually be a source of revenue for a pro player. But it's still really difficult to make money off of it, the games with the highest stakes tend to have pro players that are tough to beat, and although there's a big psychological warfare component, at the end of the day it's still a game of chance.

EDIT: You know, I'm not sure why I'm spouting this stuff, nobody really asked, and I kinda doubt anyone cares.

Yeah, if you are playing normally. If you count and switch tables, you can go for a night or so.

Hey, it's on-topic, which is good enough for me :)

I won those $30 in Blackjack, but I've always been pretty good/lucky at that game.

Blackjack's one of the best games to play, statistically. It's still in the house's favor though. Everything is; the best games are something like 45-55 for win/loss chances, respectively.

When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I don't know about other countries, but in the US, games of chance have to fall above a certain threshold or they can't be offered. And fixing a machine will end up with a SWAT team busting down your door and your ill-gotten gains going towards infrastructure maintenance.

IIRC, Baseline bets in Craps give you the most likely chance of winning (I believe it favors the player at 51% or maybe 50.1%).

My sleeping schedule is terrible, no matter what I tell myself, I never go to bed before 1:00 AM. I mean, god, I just want to get up before noon on a consistent basis.

I wish I weren't so easily distracted away from sleeping.

It's okay Josh.  I honestly like these odd times because there's nobody around to bother me.

I wish I weren't so easily distracted away from sleeping.
You sure it isn't because you just aren't tired?  Whenever I'm in a "wake up at 4pm" funk I always don't feel tired enough to sleep until say 6am.  There's just no point in pushing my body to sleep because it won't.  The best way is to get up earlier or work hard during the day physically/mentally.

Like, a me who slept for 5 hours and had to leave the house the entire day would be dead tired when they got home but a lazing about 13 hour sleep me could stay awake for a full 24 hours.

They have to have a certain threshold of how often they payout, but they don't actually have to be random, it's actually the standard procedure for slot machines pretty much everywhere to rig the machines so that they pay out a certain percentage of the money that gets put into them. They have to use random number generation to prevent people from gaming the system, but every time you win, the machine drops the chance you'll win, and every time you lose the machine increases the chance you'll win. Given the way slot machines work, when you win it feels like it's more accurate to say you won because the machine let you than to say you won because the RNG gods smiled upon you.

IIRC, Baseline bets in Craps give you the most likely chance of winning (I believe it favors the player at 51% or maybe 50.1%).
Is that why there's so many movies where character's spend time gambling craps? I'll be honest, I don't know how the game is played, and I've never actually heard of a casino that actually has a craps game running outside of Vegas. It seems to be an unpopular game (maybe this is because it's actually possible to make money off of it?).
