Our family's nine year old house cat died Saturday.  Right beside me.  That was probably the most difficult thing I've ever watched in my life.

Apparently I'm her most favoritest person ever, because she had been hiding around in my parent's house for the past week while she was sick.  When she heard me come in and heard my voice she came out of hiding to sit in my lap until she died.

Well, at least I can imagine she was happy for the last day and a half of her life.

Goodbye Baby cat.  I'll miss you.

I feel your pain, the heat here is killing me. Just today I saw a newspaper headline as I went to the store: "Heatwave might go as high as 24°C!"
Frankly, I'm not sure if I'll be able to survive the summer without melting.

More imminent personal sadness: still having trouble finding stable employment. Luckily parents and the state still provide but I would really like to experience some financial independence for once.

I feel sorry for you. I have a cat here too, and even tough he can be annoying at times, i would find it horrid if he died.

Not sure how to describe it, but my "hours have been cut," along with pretty much everyone else at the firm.

Dunno where this crap is coming from seeing as we've been busy as hell.... We've always totally worked more hours than we were paid for anyhow. Like, honestly I don't think I've ever had only a 40 hour week, its always way more and the pay is embarrassingly low especially for what you might THINK an attorney makes. I wonder if the old guy is finally winding down or what; he is 70 something. WTF?

I'm sad because my shoes are falling apart. Again. Why is it, like, literally impossible to get a pair of shoes that will last more than four months in halfway decent condition? Is 4 months really so much to ask? Argh!

Seriously though, if anyone knows of a type of shoe that isn't total shit let me know. Because I'm interested.

I have some Rockport brand shoes that have lasted me years and years. Really cheap too. Can't tell you how much me and my old Rockports have gone through, I should look into having them refurbished or whatever it is you do to shoes to repair them.

I also coined the phrase "Rockport Colonoscopy" between my friends for kicking someone's ass.

I don't know. At my job it's pretty much a given that it ends when it ends, not when it nominally should (it's from 8 to 3, nominally. I usually end at 4 though)

Again, that's perfectly acceptable for salaried jobs. It is illegal for hourly jobs, from what I understand. Like, strictly so. And I'm talking America here, I've worked a great many jobs where I was explicitly told if I ever worked unpaid they would fire me on the spot to avoid legal repercussions.

Unless you classify as an "exempt employee", your employer is breaking the law by allowing you to work without paying you. If you aren't salaried, working on commission/contract completion, or volunteering, you probably aren't exempt.

Edit: And you can sue for every hour worked you didn't get paid for, too, so if they are letting/having you work without pay, track that shit. If they ever fire you, you can get a ton of money back, since those cases tend to be won more often than lost.

However, most employees have little or no recourse against employers who have underhanded or illegal policies. Couple that with the fact that work is rare right now, and you have an employment atmosphere that is packed with these types of situations.
