I have a lot of things on my mind.  This is hard.  Everything feels...imperfect.

Knowing Australia, the answer to that is that the parks are actually composed entirely of highly venomous insects. And Golden Orb Weaver spiders.

The landlord at the house I needed in order to rescue my family from impending homelessness decided to rent to someone else.

I have 3 weeks before all goes to hell.

What...

But why :(

You have any idea what you're going to do?

Why? Because if they do not leave their house in New Orleans in 3 weeks, they will be subject to eviction, and will never be able to rent or buy a house on their own for over a decade.

The only thing I can do is find a house to rent and move everyone into it before their 3 weeks are up. There are plenty of places I can rent, but most of them would mean I would have to tell my mother to put her dog to death, abandon her only remaining hobby (ceramics) and give up most of her remaining possessions.

Depending on how much money you have, storing the stuff in a storage locker and then either sleeping out vehicles or (for those with spare cash) getting a hotel room for the interrum generally deal with your situation that way, assuming I understand it.

But I honestly don't understand in the slightest what you mean by "will never be able to rent or buy a house on their own for over a decade". What exactly is going on there? O_O None of the folks I know who have been evicted for various things have trouble finding places...

As far as dogs go, landlords can often be convinced with enough cajoling if its just one animal and you've had it for a while. Assuming its a house and not an apartment.

Its a dog that pees on carpets. If you mention that to anyone, they won't rent anything to you. The only option is to find a rental without carpet without telling them why.

My mother is a diabetic, and needs a breathing machine. She needs to carefully regulate her diet and environment or she dies. Sleeping in a car is not an option at all, and hotels are not an option for more than a few days.

And no one in this part of the country is willing to rent at a reasonable price to anyone with an eviction on their record and no bank willing to sell. In the few cases you might find someone willing to rent a place, expect to pay 6 months rent up front or double the going rate.

And storage is expensive, as are most larger houses.

Seconded.

__________

In other news, I'm just not going to the bar association meeting this time. It's a bunch of lawyers getting drunk, literally in the back of some bar they rent out. The fuck is going on?

I just can't believe this is how one gets ahead. I mean really, if it is then there is something wrong. So "networking" like this while drunk is the way to go...? Really? That's just great.... I stayed away from the bar and studied thinking that would do it....

It's called a "bar" association for a reason.

Apparently :P The play on words has become all too damn literal.

Hey, sometimes lawyers have to drown their sorrows, especially when those who get the guilty acquitted.

You think defending the guilty is difficult; you should try the innocent. It's terrifying.

My experience is clients in general drive you to drink. I'll have one "unappreciative bastard client:"

2 parts bourbon
1 part lemon juice
2 parts seltzer
2 healthy dashes of bitters

stir and pour over ice

regret your decision
