The discussion of whether beliefs should be criminalized is rather pointless, until someone can come up with a practical way to actually carry out that criminalization.

I want to go on record as saying that beliefs themselves should not be criminalized even if a way of carrying out criminalization is developed. That's the worst possible civil liberties violation that I can even imagine.

Assault is assault. Murder is murder. Clearly both are wrong regardless of who the victim is. When you do it because the victim is of a specific class (and thus presumably because you believe that class is somehow "bad"), you're looking at a few more years added to the sentence. (It is a sentence enhancement).

I've actually seen the aftermath of one of these, or rather what arguably should've been classified as one of these. Apparently when someone is murdered in an apartment, people no longer want to live there....

While all of these things truly do make me sad, I fear I've inadvertently wandered off topic? That would also make me sad.

Yes, but beliefs by themselves are harmless until acted upon.

And th e entire rationale for the "Hate Crime" designation is that such crimes tend to be more reandom and more vicious than conventional ones. Thus, it's still penalizing a pattern of behavior rather than a belief.

I suggest a new thread would be nice if people want to continue discussing that. All for?

Seems like prime stuff for the progressive rage thread. We will get a chance to get into this stuff in detail, don't sweat it too much. And the original post Truean made is worthy of our empathy. And, unfortunately, sympathy from a few of us.

This. Truean, the world is certainly better for your presence in it. I hope karma is a thing, because if earning good things is possible it's something you've certainly done.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Of course, I agree. The discussion had left it's origins, though.

Oh god. I had respect for him. Until now, that is.
