I learned today that one of my dogs died some weeks ago of a lung infection, which likely led to emoiema for the sound of what I've been told. So long, Gandhi. :'(

We are the 99%

Damn. I didn't read it earlier because I didn't want to open tumblr on my phone (lots of pictures), but that's.. Beyond sad.

Is the 99% a real number, by the way, or just rhetoric?

From what I understand, it's relatively accepted that at least 90% of the wealth in America is held by 10% of the people.

The 400 richest people in America control more wealth than the entire poorest 50% combined.

Sooo, I just got an e-mail from my grandpa who got divorced with my grandmother...about 6-8 years ago, and whom I haven't spoken to since then.
Spoiler: Message Contents (click to show/hide)

I really have no idea what to say to that, or whether I even want to respond or not. Hrmm..

I would ask for pictures. And how is this sad? I think I would be pretty happy to meet a long lost relative.

Well, I'm pretty sure he was an alcoholic for quite a long time, and wasn't a very...likable person all of the time. Hopefully that's changed though, I suppose I'll write him back.

Horribly awful headache, and neither coffee or water makes it go away.

It is very possible I'm about to give birth. Better fetch my hammer.
Protip: don't drink coffee if you have a headache. To put a long story short, it makes you lose water.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

That message sounds a lot like what AA encourages people to send out, to atone for the harm you've caused to people.

I would try to get to know him better to try and discern if he really has or hasn't changed, if it is one of those AA meeting things, in which case he's trying to do better anyways. Heck, even that message deserves a somewhat warm response, seeing as how it appears that he loves you.

And 90% of that is held by the top 10% of the top 10%. And 90% of that again is held by the top 10% of that bracket, all the way up to the top. You actually find quite a lot of doctors, engineers, plant managers etc. in the top 10% that don't realy have all that much compared to the top of the financial world.

Not exciting?
I'm about to start working on my grades (the whole university qualification thing) again, by the way. It's rather daunting. I don't want to fail again.

Scriver, you are cool.  Keep coolin'.
:D
Good advise too, had I thought of it earlier. Some cold thing on my head would've been nice.

can I be the godfather of your headchild?
Why of course! I hear things are better down where it's wetter anyway.

I know, and it would be valid advice if not for the fact that drinking too little coffee causes 78% of my headaches ;)

Plus caffeine is a vasodilator IIRC so it can help certain types of headaches even if you aren't so addicted it'd be hilarious if it happened to somebody you didn't like. Of course, you do still need to up your water intake to account for it. Don't ask me why expanding the blood vessels in your head fixes headaches, I don't know.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

It reduces pressure, which is a common cause of headaches.

Caffeine stimulates the adrenergic system, thus it'd actually be a vasoconstrictor, (and conversely, bronchodillater )IIRC, at least). It might help with some headaches because of that though. Particulariy sinus related ones.

I also doubt that coffee dehydrates you to any significant degree, or at all (yrs, caffeine has a somewhat diuretic effect (possibly due to the vasoconstrictor effect)but in this context you are ingesting it along with quite a bit of water
