The question, really, is whether your black and female friends join in when you make those jokes.  If they do, then congratulations--you've managed to pull off your intent.  If they don't, then it might be a bit harder to deal with.

It's more like I occassionally join in with them.

I was tempted to chime in when he started invoking the "Here in China" bit, but decided against it. There was no way for that to end well.

I'd at least raise a little (calm and rational) muttering, because I think it'd be enlightening for everyone--and you certainly seem capable of keeping your wits about you.

But that's just me.  It's up to you, really.

Well, again--if they seem like they're continuing to have fun, then I don't think anyone minds...

I'm just sickened by their attitude.

And it took me about an hour or so just to think of something appropriate to type up as well...

The thread seems to have died, so I don't want to be the one to breath unholy life back into it.
I did find it amusing that he made some crack about "being a placid monk in a mountain retreat if not for women", while having a quote from KaelGotDwarves in his sig---an actual monk who, from what I know of him, would happily hadouken that d-bag into another time zone.

His comment about China being a "sausagefest" is accurate -- in that China is suffering a severe gender imbalance that most guys there HATE. It's also been linked to rising rates of homosexuality in China. Not sure if I agree with the casuality there, but it's certainly a topic of discussion in Chinese media.

If he meant that China was more "masculine", then that's a regional truth. Beijingers tend to be assertive and aggressive, including women. They're also considered rude as hell by most other Chinese. Shanghainese are considered more feminine. Women supposedly prefer Shanghai men, because they're the kind that would hold your parasol for you while they go shopping with you.

There's a classic sort of dichotomy in Chinese culture between old "North China" (Bejing and environs) and old "South China" (Shanghai and the Yellow River delta--modern East China). Even today, Beijingers look down on Shanghainese as effete and scheming, and Shanghainese look down on northerners as rude, uncultured and not that far removed from the waves of steppe barbarians they're likely descended from. Maybe he's just subsumed that attitude and extending it to Western society. I knew other Americans in China who had adopted similar predjudices depending on where they lived. Though I'm probably being entirely too charitable...I think he was an asshole before he went to China, not because he's mimicking Chinese assholes.

Ah, thank you for the explanation!  That... actually kind of cheers me up from the topic, and it's interesting.  So, thank you.

Now that I've finally been diagnosed, I've been looking at my live in retrospect and digging up memories, that would better be forgotten.
And seeing how this goes all the way back to elementary school, I ask myself:
Why hasn't anybody noticed? How long would this have continued, if I didn't started seeking help myself?

I'm feeling exhausted, even though it's only past 10.
It's funny how I seem to have discovered my need for sleep.
Half a year ago, I was fine with 4-6 hours during the week. Now I feel faint even after 7-8 hours.
Of course, paragraph 1 and 2 are doubtlessly linked together...

No problem. The whole regional stereotyping thing in China is fascinating to me too. Especially in understanding where the stereotypes come from. Folks from Dongbei (the northwest area, also known as Manchuria) are stereotypically rural idiots. So you regularly see Dongbei accents used by comedians, the same way that a heavy Southern drawl made comedians like Larry the Cable Guy (actually from Nebraska) popular.

Cantonese have two main stereotypes: that they will eat ANYTHING (this is mostly true), and that they all want to be pop stars. True, for a long time Guangzhou was the pop-cultural hub of China and most pop-stars were from that region. So if you go sing karaoke, you try to put on a Cantonese accent. Which is really tricky, because the accent comes from Cantonese speaking...well, Cantonese instead of Mandarin. And IMHO, Cantonese is one of the most unpalatable-sounding languages imaginable. To me, it sounds like a warbling duck with major flatulence issues, because there's all these glottal consonants and a crazy number of tones. Good for comedies, hard to watch a Cantonese-language epic drama.

It's really interesting when you start looking at American movies and see the same sort of thing going on that you never noticed before. Like if you want a blue-collar cop, you give him a Boston or New York accent. If you want a white-collar cop, he's gonna have a Southern California accent or no accent at all. If a character has a Southern drawl, there's a narrow set of archetypes they're gonna be. If they have a "surfer" accent, they're probably stoned and moronic. If they have an upper Midwest accent, they're bright, friendly, naive and dumb as a brick. (Fargo being a movie that played with this beautifully...)

Sir Leonard III and Desdichado are both gone.
eh, just thought this might cheer up some sad people. can't say it surprises me, or that i would do it differently, but it makes me sad that the toad had to intervene, and that it possibly affected his own mood

Wish you could get rid of shitters like that in real life. I used to have a lot of shut in friends who talked the same way about women. Always used to pretend that they were doing it ironically sor something, then just stopped talking to them.
