Was watching an episode of House, recent bad weather + shitty dish = 1/3 of the episode missing.

:(

Planning for the future. Is it better to avoid the worst outcome or risk trying for the best?

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Depends on probabilities.  But game theory in general says "don't do anything that has the possibility of resulting in infinite badness."

... Why, yes, I am the sort of person who draws flowcharts when I have a crush on someone.

My expected loss is the same in both cases. I get a guaranteed 2 years of regret versus risking 3 years of regret on the offchance of being able to pull off 1 year. I can't assign reasonable probabilities to either outcome if I take the risk, because I don't know enough of the variables.

That sounds like it'd be a good idea to try to risk it, then.

That's just me, though.

Feeling it's a bit too bad I won't be able to change my nick in here now that I've finally found out what to replace Nine with.

Sounds like it's time to suit up and take the risk.

Bwaaah? I usually just (used to) get them in bed. It's a lot easier that way.

We probably have different intentions with crushes, though.

Yeah, this is more of an "I'm not totally sure how much I like this person, and I have 0 idea how much they like me, so I need to come up with a plan of action that will encourage them to become interested in me but not enough that I can't back out, and not so much that it becomes embarrassing."

But still, I do really like my flowcharts.

That's...oddly exactly how I always looked at crushes. I'm just more physically oriented than mentally oriented.

Yeah, I'm very, very heavily weighted towards mental.
