I feel your pain.

just to spite smartphone manufacturers everywhere, I'm picking my new phone based solely on how many buttons it has.

More = better.

Kinda... [edit] I had a box of donuts, they were dry and regular. Now they're soaking wet and taste like piss. How did this happen?!

You/someone else pissed on them? Occam's razor.
I find it highly unlikely as only the donuts are wet, there is no salty tasting liquid in the box.
Well, dough is pretty absorbent.

I went looking at possible replacements for my venerable Nokia cellphone this morning. I now feel like an 80-year-old who can't cope with technology. Dang kids with their fancy gadgets and cameras and keyboards and touchscreens and such nonsense. I just want a portable device that I can put a phone number into, and it will let me talk to the person at that phone number.

I don't need 4 G's! That doesn't even make sense! There's no "G" in phone!

Back in my day, we stuck our finger into a big wheel thing and turned it to each digit we wanted, and that's the way we LIKED it! It built character. And finger strength. And if you picked up the phone and somebody was already talking, you quietly hung up and went and had a sandwich while they finished talking.

(Yes, I grew up with a rotary phone *and* a party line.)

What what? Since when are party lines old? I still have one, I get paranoid that people hear me clattering the phone around trying to hang it up.

My options tend to be:

A. A phone which is basically a tiny little computer, complete with keyboard fit only for preteen Asian girls or those cyborg secretaries from Ghost in the Shell.

B. A phone which is completely smooth, black and featureless, like a tiny Clarke monolith. It comes to life as my hand glides across it, and again is like a tiny little computer.

Both of these phones are capable of near-instant communication to almost anywhere on the planet, are linked into a network of satellites which enable me to find my location anywhere on the planet, and can run apps and browsers so as to run Google Earth, which I can link to the GPS, enabling me to literally see from orbit the area in which I'm standing.

It dawns on me that it's finally happened: I'm living in the future. There still are no personal jetpacks or flying cars, but the goddamned Star Trek communicator/personal supercomputer is a reality.

This is a phone that needs too be made. it needs the exact ratio of dimensions, ans must be fully jet black and featureless till swiped.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

What's awesome is this should totally be possible.  Do the whole touchpad thing and make the lines between the buttons light up when it's turned on, in a cool wave.  The actual screen would be tougher, but I'm sure something like this will be totally possible in a few years.
