I've had my fair share of fun in the forums (upper and lower). Probably the only reason I pop my head in the other parts of the forum is to be creative, but other than that, I'm a rather sparing poster. Then again, I'm kinda that way in real life as well.

Basically, I only really speak if I feel I can contribute something. I think I can see where Janet is coming from. When you don't have as much (that's relevant) to say, but do want to talk (usually about all sorts of other things), you do tend to feel kinda out of place.

EDIT:
I understand feeling out of the loop with the math stuff and whatnot, and I'm not much a fan of those who join communities/gaming groups purely for/because of the memes either. But yeah, just do what you feel comfortable doing. I mean, life is meant to be enjoyed (got out of a short spontaneous depression a day or 2 ago, and found a way to stop future hits (IE- finally learned the lesson and took it to heart a bit late, but I got it nonetheless. Better late than never, I suppose. Maybe should belong in HAPPY, but I feel it's more relevant here.)).

Also also, just to make sure, this sudden outburst of defeatism isn't in any way related to being dethroned by Vector as the Female Forumite Everybody Wants To Be Friends With(FFEWTBFW), right?
Right?

What part of "Do not respect" did you not read? Vector is a nice girl and all. But I don't respect anyone with their head in the clouds pursuing something like she is. The world needs more tradespeople and workers. Not thinkers.

I was trying to pinpoint the source of your frustration with the community there, while possibly turning it into a joke. Obviously didn't work.

Oh whatever. People come and go. The DF board doesn't really fit my personality, but if you balance it with other places, it works well. I don't really know you, but I'm sure you'll probably talk to the people you want to talk to on here by different means.

I think it might be a little...extreme, I suppose is the word, to say the world doesn't need thinkers. I mean, certainly the world needs tradespeople and workers, but I don't think at the expense of intellectual pursuits, ya know?

I should mention that I wasn't condoning acting like a dumbass in text adventures, only pointing out that it seems to be all the rage.
Perhaps, but this particular adventure had some rules that greatly discouraged such: Namely, the GM takes ALL suggestions. Stupid ones don't actually happen, but they waste the character's time as he ignores the players for a while. Almost got him killed a couple times already.

Janet, I don't understand the first thing about math... well, okay, so I can do math up to about Trigonometry without it getting too hairy... but even when people start discussing things that go over my head, I just refrain from commenting (since I don't have much to add) or I ironically poke fun at them for being dorks. I don't feel like it completely alienates me from them... it's just one of their interests that I don't have the same appreciation for. I share enough other interests with the people here that I can still hold a good conversation with them, or geek out about something else. To each their own, as they say.

However, if you are feeling like your interests aren't reciprocated enough, you might be able to find another community out there that is more in line with them. Though there would be a Janet-shaped hole in the discussion board, don't feel like you have an obligation to stay. Do whatever would be the most fun for you, or make you the most happy, since that's the only person you should be concerned about in this.

I'm just saying, the world doesn't need LESS of them. It does need the ones we do have redirected to more practical purposes half the time. But both are important. I just feel there's a lack in understanding of importance of the supposed "Little people" in the workforce.

From a place that was recently nearing 22% unemployment in an industrial area, I can tell you that the world does not need more general labor workers. Tradespeople is one thing, but any idiot can do general labor (I've done my fair share.) The world needs the "thinkers" to prevent total stagnation. General laborers can make anything that you tell them to...but if you have no thinkers, what will they make?

Again I'm being taken out of what I meant. I mean as in tradespeople. Like electronics or mechanics work. Even engineering fits in there. All those fields are looking for more people and that's what I mean. There needs to be a drive for that kind of work. The fact that Ill respect a general laborer more than a mathematician doesn't mean I think that kind of work isn't important. I'm not Armok, I understand the world needs a balance but I just think there's not enough of a drive for those middle of the ground fields as there can be. My own preferences and beliefs do not affect how I perceive the world at large.

I have nothing but respect for blue-collar workers.  My father may be a "rocket scientist," but he spent years cleaning parks and basically starving.  My mother worked in a foundry and has lived in a chicken coop.  Physical labor is hard, man, and that's exactly why I'd rather sit in an ivory tower, training engineers and scientists in the basics of mathematics so that our world doesn't fall apart.  I trust myself to do this more than I do my peers, and as such that's the route I'm pursuing.

Dunno.  I'm sorry I bother you so much.

I took Consumer math instead of Pre-Calculus.

Why did I do that.

Even with that point of view, last I checked (and I may be wrong, so bear with me and correct me if need be,) Vector is looking to become a professor at a University. Those middle-ground jobs need college education. I have a friend who is in for Electrical Engineering, and he pretty much has to have at the very least a two year degree to get an apprenticeship anywhere. Same for me and Programming (just switch apprenticeship out for entry level job.)

I know that Programming will not make me rich. It's not glamorous. I'll never be famous. It's a chance to hopefully provide for my budding family and maybe even make my life a little better in the process. The thing is, to get there, I need those people above where I want to be for that position to even exist. Without folks like Linus Torvalds and Bill Gates, and Alan Turing before them, and Einstein before him, and Galileo, and Aristotle, and Hammurabi before them...well, I wouldn't be able to even imagine where the world would be.
