Given his escapades with the medical industry regarding his depression, I don’t think the armed forces would take him on mental health grounds.

Just a note: Religion does not really help suicidals. Atheism helps more, as there is no "God hates me" angst. I know from personal experience.

I was suicidal when I was 13. For the reason of "God hates me". Hence why I turned to atheism.

Sure, but that's no reason for such a generalisation.
I'm not religious myself, but I've heard of plenty of (sometimes severely!) depressed folks finding solace/a purpose in such shenanigans.
'Swhere the whole term "born again X" comes from, after all.

It can help sometimes, and that's true, but it's not the only solution to the problem like some people think, or can sometimes even be detrimental.

I've come to the conclusion that most, if not all, religions don't actually have any connection to god.

I wouldn't say that's necessarily true.  I have my own concept of what I would accept as a believable, valid definition of god... and no religion I'm aware of would have any meaningful connection with it.

Ultimately, all religions are man-made.

Sorry I didn't translated the acronym in my head, guess is the lack of sleep. "Organización No Gubernamental", or Non-governmental organizations.

LordBaal, thanks a lot for the support and advice.  I wrote a much longer post about the drinking and the friend situation, but I decided to save it locally instead.  It was healthy to think through it all, but it shared too much.

Summary:  I do really care about moderation, and I'm aware of how much I risk any time I lose control like that.  I didn't even care about life, before, now I do.  My friend, by teasing me, is just reminding me of the danger.  When he provokes me into a drunken argument, no real harm is done.  But what if a family member had done the same thing?  It has happened before.  It does damage.  I need to be ready, or self-aware enough to retreat and sleep.  And I'm getting close to that point, more careful all the time.
