So. Life sucks.
Yes, yes it does.

But depression sucks more balls than life could ever hold a candle to. Luckily, you can get through it. Look for professional help. Absolutely do not give up. Rant in the sad thread. Everything helps.

Talking to people is hugely important. Doesn't have to be about anything major. Even a chat about the weather is a good thing.

Exercise is another thing that's worthwhile. It's kind of hypocritical of me to recommend it but it's definitely a big part of mental health.

Finally, if things start getting to you, don't be afraid to blob out for a few hours eating ice cream and playing games or whatever. It's better than wallowing in self-pity.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

Really, this goes for anybody.

The sad thing is, there's almost nothing I can do.

I will gladly be vented at, though.

That is certainly a major issue with helping over the internet.

I'm going to be 18 this year and I've still never actually had any serious emotional attatchment to another human being. I'm still just as afraid of looking people in the eyes as before, I've still got no idea what being in a real relationship or even a real friendship feels like and I'm still pretty well known as the big guy who never talks to anyone in the class and is most of the time way too serious.

I seriously hate myself and my personality. Why the fuck can I not just be someone else who is happier and not eternally cold to everyone even though he tries not to be?

Don't worry, love will fuck you over eventually. It happens to pretty much everyone. Enjoy its absence while it lasts - life becomes much less enjoyable once you're past that point, at least as long as you're unsuccessful.

I'm going to do the smart thing here and disengage. This isn't a hill I paticularly care to die on.

I've just ended up being intentionally very silly. Otherwise my own tendency to be overly formal would likely land me in the same situation.

That sure helped me recently in the WTF thread!  I mean, I would have been okay just venting and knowing people saw it...  But it felt good to see your reply, so thanks.
And I can't thank a certain someone enough for listening to my problems in PMs.  I didn't think I needed an ear, but he reached out and it really helped.
And someone else messaged me on Steam a few times, and they're really cool and I appreciate them too.

...I didn't plan to share but I guess I talked to my dad today about some serious stuff.  [Snipped because oversharing]

I'm glad I can help, even if only by existing...

In unrelated news, I just realized I have maybe three to six friends.  Total.

Sigh.

Eh, a small circle of good friends works pretty well.

Circumstances beyond my control have left me with a huge number of people I have reason to consider "friends" most of which I don't really know in person, and the majority of which are at least a decade older than myself. On the other hand, the group of people I actually know well, and am in any kind of a steady relationship {Not romantic, that's currently irrelevant} with, is really very small, at least in part because I'm currently in the process of rebuilding it from almost nothing.

Most of them aren't very close friends, really.  That's the sad bit.

That sounds like something to work on. Certainly, if I can do it, most anyone can.

It does.  But so does homework.  And getting home at a decent hour.  And sleeping.  And all the important things that make it nigh-impossible to have any real time to actually do that in meatspace.
