I've never really considered myself as much of a metal fan... I still can't take anything with screaming or death growls, it just doesn't sit well with me.
But lately I've been listening to a bit of Tool, and I'm finding myself growing more into them. Some of the earlier stuff doesn't sit too well with me, but I've been listening extensively to Ænema and Lateralus (the songs). Lateralus just sounded cool to me, but Ænema...
It took me a few times before I got used to the sound and could actually start liking it, now I'm just entranced by the absolutely intense emotional power in that song. I've always liked music that has a lot of "feeling" in it. I think that might be why I don't care for Death metal and whatnot, because I just can't believe the growls. It just sounds to me like they're trying too hard.
I also really like Porcupine Tree, but I never really thought of them as a metal band... More just Prog rock.
So... With that knowledge, does anyone have suggestions for this metal neophyte? I'm also a fair fan of Alice in Chains, but again, I'm not sure of their metalness. Like I said, I'm new to this sort of thing. Exact classification is beyond me.
(And I'm just assuming it's alright for someone else to ask for metal recommendations, even though this is still Vester's personal thread for all I know)
