Equilibrium is also good, yeah.

But can they face Eluveitie?

EDIT: Know what, I'll also throw in Thyrfing. And of course, their cover of Over The Hills And Far Away. The madness of their songs is like a mighty storm lodged inside a beautiful ocean of blood.

I really just wanted to name them. I love Slania's Song, brutal gaelic part.

Check out High 'N' Dry from Def Leppard.  Seriously, this is one of my favorite hard rock albums. Before Def Leppard succumbed to fame and pop/rock stardom, they rocked pretty hard.

Black Sabbath with Ozzy or Dio, if you want metal, check out "Dehumanizer"...it is like nothing you've heard before with Dio.  If you're a fan of the game DOOM, you'll probably recognize "After All The Dead".

If you can, check out King Diamond. His vocals can be quite annoying, but the music is great; and all of his albums revolve around a story. If Edgar Allan Poe was in a metal band, he'd be in King Diamond.  As for albums, check out "Abigail", "Them", and "Conspiracy"

Mercyful Fate is one I like too; it was King Diamond's band before his solo band.  More along the lines of Judas Priest/Iron Maiden, but their lyrical content might turn you off.  They were one of the first black metal bands, and talked a lot about the occult, Satanism, etc., so that might turn you away.  They were a great influence on Metallica.

Try Motorhead.  Just some simple rock 'n' roll, but they are one of Metallica's biggest influences. All I have to say is they've got Lemmy. Check out "Ace of Spades" for a good starting point for the band.

Lordi... Can't forget Lordi. Total cheesy awesome.

They won the Eurovision song contest. And this is contest which all the main acts are normally pop singers!

I add to this list (And some aren't Metal strictly, but at least close genres):
White Zombie
Rammstein
System of a Down
Rage against the Machine
Nine Inch Nails
Maximun the Harmone (Japanese Metal, fuck yeah!)
KMFDM
Sepultura
Fear Factory

Opeth. Progressive death metal is awesome. Savatage are a good old metal band, and try Saxon as well. And Bigelf.

Listened to Rasputin. Laughed for about 5 minutes straight. ;D

I'll look through the other bands you guys've suggested, and if I like 'em I'll put 'em on the list in the OP as a reminder for me to pick up their albums.

Slayer. Pants down the epitome of metal. Although I had to see them live once to get into the music, back in the day. Oh and Strapping Young Lad is also a must-have.

Not knowing all the songs of Ride the Lightning by heart pretty much excludes you from calling yourself a metalhead.

Elitism aside, and more to your tastes, from looking at that list you got:

Should listen to, mainstream-must-knows
Slayer
Strapping Young lad
Metallica - Black and all before that
Fear Factory (Demanufacture and up, until Dino left)
Sepultura (Roots)
Machinehead (first two albums)
Pantera

and personally I'd add...
Rammstein (Engel and up until and not including Rosenrot)

Singasongy-gothy-'metal'
Hollenthon
Therion
Tiamat
Type-O Negative

'Core
Static-X
Pain

Cheesy theme metal
Amon Amarth
Nile

Really Old
Motorhead
Megadeth
Dio
Sabbath

Most of the stuff I was going to say has already been listed.

Stormlord (Just watch out for the comments on this one, there's a trollercoaster moving through.

Hammers of Misfortune

Slechhtvalk

Kalmah

Eternal Tears of Sorrow

Ludicra  (Yeah, I know it's from The Sims, it's the only song of theirs with good recording quality on YouTube)

Blind Guardian and by extension Demons and Wizards

I'm running out of bands that people haven't already brought up.

I remember when someone posted Winter Madness slowed down 30% and said it was a cover by Amon Amarth.  I almost believed them.

'Core
Static-X
Pain

I would call those industrial, personally. Not very 'core in my opinion.

Eternal Tears of Sorrow

I was thinking of mentioning them.

Kalmah is also 'rad.

True, but close enough, I was trying to match bands to his list a bit. My personal genre-classifications are generally frowned upon. That, and I don't really like 'core so I abuse the name for other stuff ;).

Based on the thread so far you might like In Flames,Arch Enemy and The Haunted(actually I've only heard one Haunted song but the three seem similar) both swedish so they're vikings in nationality and spirit ;) Sister Sin is also swedish but low-key and slightly less metal and more hard rock.

And I can't understand all the hate for St. Anger. I just feel it's the same as the hate for Load/Reload("OMFG, they cut their hair, sellouts!"). I especially think Invisible Kid and Dirty Window deserves more love (Also, I'm not saying this to troll, I don't like to be flamedohgodpleasedontflameme) For sheer awesomeness, go for Whiplash. If I ever manage to see them live, I pray it'll be on the setlist.

For older stuff, there's Voivod, Flotsam And Jetsam (back before Jason joined 'tallica), Gamma Ray and seconding Judas Priest(Painkiller!).

There are some great videogame themed bands like Mega Driver, Powerglove, Minibosses,NESkimos,Vertexguy(epic solos!)...

Oh, and Finntroll, Priestess, Primus, Lillasyster and it's "parent" band LOK(if you don't mind swedish lyrics) and Dream Theater and damn this post turned out long and incoherent.  :-[ Sorry!

The problem with St. Anger is that all the songs are the same.
