The Music Thread
« on: October 11, 2009, 11:13:35 am »

I constanly have comments and thoughts about music, but I generally deem them un-thread worthy. So I'm starting this thread to allow for me, and any others with the same problem, to post any and all thoughts about music.

The only rules are as follows:

1) NO TROLLING!

2) You may express your opinion about a mentioned band, song, or type of music, but please be tactful.

3) If it is Music related in ANY way, you may post it. PM me if you want to be super safe.

I'll start it off. I just found out that two bands I really want to hear play, All That Remains & Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, are coming to my general area.

I'm also noticing a very annoying trend at my school. Besides me, every metal fan at my school thinks that everything Metallica has made since the Black album is horrible. I like things from every Metallica album and it gets to me after 30 minutes of "Kill 'em All is the best Metallica album." or the ever popular "Metallica sold out." line. Please tell me this isn't a wide spread occurence.

I'd list all the albums I own, but it would take too long.
I love all kinds of music, from Tom Waits to Unexpect. I predominately listen to metal, country and folk rock, but there's a lot of other stuff. I'm pretty disappointed with a lot of the crap in the charts these days, because it seems that every other generation produced some kind of musical awesomeness, and we've managed a load of useless pop stars who can only sing using studio magic.
To remedy this, I've been playing some really raw or experimental stuff, like Captain Beefheart. I also listen to Those Poor Bastards, probably the gloomiest, grimmest country band in the world, and i like it.

the whole "metallica sold out thing" is pretty popular everywhere these days.usually the people who say it never even listened to half of what they sung, they just quote others to sound cool.typical.
I grew up on things like metallica, classic rock in general, and the like, lately i've moved on to metal and melo-death. to each his own,but i absolutely hate this trend of punk music and rap.i try to respect others music tastes, but i cannot stand that little whiny emo music the kids are playing nowadays.i can stand country, but i tend to switch the station when it comes on.

Whoa, birds coming out of something being destroyed, never seen that before.

Anyway, right now I'm listening to Wintersun, I also like Hammers of Misfortune, Alestorm, Ensiferum, Eluveitie, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Children of Bodom is alright, Kalmah, Slechtvalk, Blind Guardian, Demons and Wizards, Korpiklaani is okay, Stormlord, and a lot of music I don't listen to enough to be able to think of offhand.

I'm going to do my best to avoid stating an arguement over whether or not Metallica "sold out", but I must ask. In what way did Metallica sell out?

I wasn't referring to the selling out, I was referring to their old music being better.  I don't want to get into a debate about this, though.

I also listen to Those Poor Bastards, probably the gloomiest, grimmest country band in the world, and i like it.

This.  Lonesome Wyatt has the craziest range of singing voices I've ever heard.  Bourbon-drenched country singer, crazy yokel, rapist, and in their album The Plague, DAT RASP.

I pretty much like anything I listen to, with the exception of country and rap. I hate both of those for whatever reason.

Though Johnny Cash is still awesome somehow.

Also, Metallica never sold out or changed, they were always a bunch of annoying pussys.

I was practically raised on Pink Floyd, and there are quite a few other selections out of the muddle of "classic rock" that I enjoy.  Uriah Heep, Nazareth, Blue Öyster Cult, Led Zeppelin (naturally), AC/DC, Aerosmith, The Cult, Ozzy, Rainbow, Jimi Hendrix, and so on.

Lately I've been listening to a few Alt Rock and Prog Rock songs, with some Grunge thrown in.  Audioslave, Soundgarden, Porcupine Tree, Stone Temple Pilots, some Nirvana, Puddle of Mudd, Alice in Chains, plus a few others.

I've also enjoyed certain Heavy Metal selections, but I can't say I'm a fan of the genre as a whole.  There are a few Tool songs I like, and a few other bands that I can't for the life of me remember the names of...  Just found out about them while listening to stuff on Pandora radio.

In general, most of the Metal genres really don't appeal to me...  I need to hear a lot of emotion in a song, a lot of "feeling".  The harder metal stuff I've listened to is either emotionless power-playing, or arbitrarily angry at something just for the heck of it.  I also feel that a lot of the thrash/speed/death/black/so on metal just has too many notes in too short a time frame...   I can't appreciate how each one blends in, and it all just sounds like a "quantity > quality" thing.  Really just not my style, although I do happen to know quite a few metalheads...  All of whom are constantly trying to "bring me into the light".

Also, I cannot abide anything with screamed lyrics or death growls.  I've had someone tell me time and again that you just get used to it after a while so you can hear the lyrics, but I quite honestly would rather spend my time doing something I enjoy.

I also have a penchant for Stereophonics and the Wallflowers...   In short, my musical taste tends to disagree with that of everyone I know.  Aside from, interestingly enough, my parents.

For real, Sofia? It seems like you were just trying to start something with that. Remeber, be tactful.

I do agree here. Johnny Cash is indeed awesome.

Why have two people already slapped a sentence stating that their previous comment was tactful on the end of their post already? Did I use the word incorrectly in my post, and this is a some what subtle way of telling me, or is it just for fun?
