Dwarves with job preferences/rooms.
« on: December 08, 2007, 07:40:00 pm »

I know this potentially could make the game unplayable but maybe it's worth a shot...

I would like to see dwarves to have job preferences. Just like they know like/dislike being drafted/undrafted, dwarves should also like or complain when the player assign them specific jobs which they don't like or have no experience in doing. Also dwarves should give preference to tasks they like and try to avoid doing tasks they don't like.

Also, I would like to see workshops to work more like rooms instead of specific buildings. That is. Instead of selecting a layout for a specific workshop the player should set rooms and assign them the type of labor that should be done in that room. And even set an specific dwarf with the necessary skills as the owner of the room/shop. That way the dwarves will improve the workshops/furnaces by bringing all the stuff they need inside. Also the cluttering factor of workshops should be governed by the alloted room space. And dwarves working on them should appreciate valuable rooms and maybe even work faster on them.

When the economy kicks in, dwarves should be able to buy or rent the workshops of their preference and gain monies from the work they do on them or ask for a fee for allowing any other dwarf to work on them.

As long as they intelligently respect the notion that, seriously, we don't need 10 tanners per fort.

Well, if you only designate a room to be a tanning workshop then either you assign one dwarf to be the only tanner or let several tanners work on the same workshop one at a time.

Or maybe if you put several tables on the same shop you could have several dwarves working on them. Although that would contribute to the cluttering and unhappiness of the workers by having less space.
