A MUD true to D&D?
« on: October 09, 2009, 11:30:59 pm »

Are there any? Or rather, is it even possible? I'm google-fu-ing this for some minutes now and nothing worth of checking comes up.
Enforced RP is a plus.

I've never seen one, but then again I've seen all of two MUDS, and only played one of those :P . I don't see why it wouldn't be possible, at least at a raw-mechanics level, though most of DnD's quality comes from the malleability a human DM brings to it, I believe, as the mechanics are rather shitty on their own, being streamlined to allow more focus on roleplaying than die-rolling. Especially 4e. Fuck 4e and its hyper simplified mmorpg style bullshit.

Yeah, D&D's mechanics are rather poor. I've seen quite a lot, though. At least two that I played for a while, but I no longer remember what they were. Something that follows D&D strictly would be pwned by powergamers, so expect any good MUD to have a few tweaks.

If the D&D requirement is more important than the MUD requirement, you might try Incursion, a single-player OGL (D20) based roguelike that is D&D flavored.  Here's the forum thread.  Be advised that it's buggy.  It suffers from random crashes.  (I suspect concurrency issues.)

How true is it to D&D though? I've been looking for some good d&d-ish experience, but I don't feel like installing Neverwinter Nights again.

It's pretty close.  From what I saw of Neverwinter Nights, it's kind of shoehorned, and isn't too similar to D&D.

The best PC adaptation of D&D I've seen is Temple of Elemental Evil.  That game is super-hard, but really captures the feel of D&D very well.

This. If ToEE had a campaign editor like NWN and had multiplayer, we woudn't have any trouble with playing D&D online. Also it has the best sprites I've seen on a D&D game (2D that is).
I loved ToEE, but it was just so so so so short  :(

I personally think NWN worked great. Does anyone know where I can get the Hordes of Undrentide for a realistic price though? I saw it at Half Price Books, and it was $50!!! Not only that, they had the nerve to leave the original price tag of $35 on the back...

Anyway, I'd like to see a DnD computer game with a reasonably simple editor (not asking them to sacrafice much of anything in the way of accessibility) for homebrew rules. Of course, I'm personally quite favorable to just playing with maptool or whatever.

Also: Is 2 or 3.5 better? I've only played 3/3.5 stuff, and at that I've never had a tabletop campaign go past level 4...

Lotsa people will throw rocks at me for this, but I think Baldur's Gate used 2, and it sucked compared to 3.5 stuff. Baldur's gate itself didn't feel all too D&Dey, it felt for like a overcomplicated and slow moving diablo for me.

I might do a Lets Play!: Temple of Elemental Evil, after I find my copy (or borrow it), using only characters created by me and forum goers, unless someone has done it/does it first.

A MUD really true to D&D must have two character sheets. One for the avatar, and another for the player. The game would operate on two levels, on the avatar level, you fight in a generic high Fanasty universe.

On the player level, you compete with your other Players to get on the good graces with the GM, so as to help make Avatar Play easier for you.

Better than that is a sophisticated dungeon master client so someone can be dungeon master- but that would eba  funny deconstruction. :)

Baldur's Gate 2 really butchered AD&D. AD&D was so 'advanced' that I can't believe people played it before computers were invented.

If you're after a DND mud there's one I've played (lived on :P) for about the last ten years that is fairly good - www.shadowgate.org is the transition website at present, or you can connect through firedragon.com:6969

It's been 2nd edition for most of the time I've been playing it, but this year it's started to move to a 3rd/4th ed hybrid, so maybe a bit closer to NWN now than it used to be. Became roleplay-enforced over the first few years I played and has been so since.

Not sure if it's what you're after but maybe worth a try :)

...Huh.
It doesn't appear to be older than a few months.
A few of the pages only have "Coming soon..." in them and the board is pretty new.

DISREGARD THIS.

It looks interesting, though. I'll try it out tomorrow. Good luck.
(Watch out. You might be called a spambot[even though you may be] for putting your first post here. <_< )
