'Ello, I need a game, again. This time, I intend to play it with my various assorted friends/enemies/relatives. Recommend me anything, as long as it's free. I'd like it, however, if it wasn't a mindless shooter focused on gore, however. I have the Orange Box, mind you, quite a few of the people I intend to play it with have it as well. I'll take anything multiplayer, this includes the painful Split Screen games that end up with multiple people crowding around my laptop/computer.
*Cough* FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE *Cough*
Also, even though I let this devolve into a Balanced Annihilation thread, I still need recommendations. So, yeah, post amid the nonsense.

Try Total Annihilation.  See if that isn't free yet. Because I don't think you can buy it in stores.

Oddly enough, I was searching for that. Turns out I'm technically a pirate if I download it, but apparently Spring:1944, which is somewhat like Total Annihilation, is free. Bleh, I really don't want to be a pirate.

M'hm, anyway, thoughts on 1944? I just saw a video of it, it seems all Spring games are essentially TA on steroids.
Also, somebody, prove the legality of TA:Spring, I can't seem to.
Forget it, I just downloaded both. Somebody play with me so I can feel just how horrible I am. Also, I will be sure to show it to my friends/enemies/relatives. I need to get awesome at ti before they get decent.

I have the worst feeling this is going to devolve into a TA thread, but thanks.

Just download the Spring Engine + Spring Module Updater, and then get Balanced Annihilation, it's the closest to TA they have.

You mentioned the Orange Box, have you played many Source mods?

Zombie Master isn't exactly polished (and I think the poor thing's mostly abandoned now. *sob*), but it's great for some good ol' zombie-blasting goodness, with a significant helping of silliness due to some fantastically bad AI at times (not to mention the players).

GMod is of course an eternal party favorite.  You can get build 9 for free, or pay $10 for the shiny version.

The Hidden works alright with a lower number of players, and is a rather interesting little experience.  I would highly recommend playing it with friends, as the experience of having some no-life enter the server and proceed to utterly dominate each and every other person is not a great time.  The gap between beginners and experts is a truly massive one.

Also, check to see how many of you have Warcraft III.  There are some very nice multiplayer maps out there, including quite a few PvE maps (my favorite type.  Never really liked fighting other people).

There's also Savage: the Battle for Newerth.  The original was released for free some time ago.  It's an interesting little title, a sort of FPS/RTS.  Duel servers are useful for practicing your one-on-one combat abilities.  I actually got somewhat good at the dueling aspect, and if I can do it, anyone can do it.

It works with lower player numbers, but you'll need at least four on a standard map in order to fulfill the bare minimum of what the game offers.

Also, I installed Spring plus a few modules just recently.  My only comment is that the UI is horrid.  Unless there's some way of tweaking it or installing a patch/plugin, I don't think I can play it.  I'll leave that to the AI.
