At first glance, it may seem to be a typical anime boy blushing, but a closer inspection reveals a dirtied face and an expression of grim acceptance that, together with the soldier's uniform, suggests a young man forced into adulthood by the violence of battle, and knows there is more to come. The warm firelight from off-frame gives the work a sombre feel, as he awaits the coming of a dawn that may well be his last.
