Moment of truth people!  Here it comes!

UPDATE: Well that was a whole lot of nothing.  Just grainy IR footage of crater shadow, and then ziltch.  I want my money back.

What.

I WANT TO SEE IT DAMNIT

Fuck the footage, give me the spectra!

Man, my Science teacher gave me a newspaper talking about this, and I was like, "I'M GETTING ME TELESCOPE OUT NOW."  Then I realized it happened a hour ago at 6 am.

:[

I don't care if it looked like nothing.  I love astronomy.

You mean that there are people who DON'T want to sling a car-sized hunk of steel at a barren rock 385,000 kilometers away?? They're all a bunch of beardless hippie tree hugging wussy dirt worshiping tye-dye pansy face paint fig leaf alcohol free weed smoking ELVES.

Oooh, the explosion this morning was awesome. How could you guys miss it? First there was a camera with 1FPS rolling on the moon, and some talking, and then this heatseeing thermal camera thing started rolling. Just after that, the camera switched back to the moon revealing, you'd never guess, A BUNCH OF CRATERS AND NO EXPLOSION.

It blew my mind, It did.
Ah so no dust cloud whatsoever or was it just to small to really see? I'd be rather surprised if there was no observatory witnessing this with enough clarity to warrent recording it. Anybody find one?

something i posted somewhere else

"Looking at it from a simplistic physics standpoint, MmVm+MpVp=McVc (where m is moon, p is probe, c is combined and M is mass, V velocity.
Lets look at it from the reference frame of the moon (eg, so velocity of the moon is zero). The mass of the moon is 7.36 × 10^22 kgs. The velocty of the probe is about 2680m/s, and its mass should be something like 2300kg (19 orders of magnitude lower than the mass of the moon).
Doing the maths gets a change in velocty of the final combined mass of about 8.37 x 10^-17 m/s. This speed is tiny. It would take 378million years for the moon to move 1 meter out of its orbit at this velocity. Also consider that the moon itself is more than 360000km away from the earth already."

Heh, you still need to prove your point?

OP was enough, the only justifiable argument against this is that our time and resources aren't well spent on space research. And of course- meteors hit it all the damn time, from varying directions.

Chill yourself, he wasn't upset at you.  He was filling you in on why people were still posting in this thread.  Namely, the discussion relating to:
[*snip*] the only justifiable argument against this is that our time and resources aren't well spent on space research. And of course- meteors hit it all the damn time, from varying directions.

Nothing personal about it.  And if it was, well, still doesn't hurt to pretend it wasn't.

Not personal at all.
Spoiler: Take on of these, man- (click to show/hide)

Heh, back on topic:

I can only imagine there had to be a dust cloud- not only was it what they were looking for, but I can hardly imagine dropping a coin on the moon without a significant dust cloud, much less rocket.  ;)

I don't get it... i'm not trying to prove a point, i just thought people might like to know how much something like this could move the moon. I guess i should have stated that before since people don't seem to understand that.

Anyway, yay for cool science stuff, however i really think we'd be better off just sending robots to the moon for the forseeable future.

I like science. Since teaches me lotsa stuff. It makes my brain grow big. And lets me live on the moon without having to ship stupidly large amounts of H20 accross a radiated minefield that exists between our electromagnetic field of awesome and the moon. Yum yum. Irradiated water, taassttty.

Also, since there is water on the moon, it means the probability of water being else where is higher. Namely mars.

Did you find an article saying that they found water?

If so, please link it. I wanna see!

I wonder if it might have thrown the moon out of orbit by a millimeter.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

*facepalm*

I did do some rather nice calculations for people to see above.

I see the rather nice calculations, hauser. I was just wondering if, you know - there's any chance that there might have been a change, not worrying about the drastic consequences of it.

Worry is for chums.
