Is this dangerous?
« on: October 07, 2009, 03:04:59 pm »

Basically, I've started using ramps instead of channelling (if I'm digging a large pit, as it requires less micromanagement. Is there any reason not to do this?

If you decide to clear the area like you are making a pit or pool, you end up having a harder time with ramps than you do with channels as you go through hell basically trying to get that final ramp removed.

if you aren't too concerned about things getting out have fun with the ramps.

Well if it's 1 z-level deep ramps are easy to manage. Instead of making a perfect square leave a small walkway jetting out 1-2 tiles into the pit. Remove all ramps except one connected to this tile then channel the tile jetting out. The ramp will be destroyed due to a lack of a supporting wall (though I've noticed this bugs out sometimes).

If you are digging anything deeper than 1 z-level you have the same issue of how to get the dwarves out of the pit with or without ramps.

Getting  out's the easy part. Just go all the way down to the tombs, then wall off the gap you left through.

With ramps, YMMV.

I always get random weird "ghost ramps" in the middle of the air, pointing downwards even though there's nothing underneath them; or ramps that LOOK accessible, but aren't; or caveins that seem to be caused by removing the final "support" for the "ghost ramps".

That's the second time this Meme was brought up here.

Ahem.
The only thing you have to worry about with major ramp digging is that digging a ramp under a tree will cause a cave-in.

What about a boulder? I've never used ramps much.

Also, what's a meme?

About five pounds.  Sorta like Updoc, in that respect.

Nah, boulders are mostly just decoration.

And a meme is a word to describe an fad, an idea, catchphrase, etc, that latches on to many people in a way that they feel the need to repeat it.
In this case, "I just accidentally a whole coca cola bottle, is this bad?" is one such meme.

Originally coined by Richard Dawkins to mean units of culture, but in the context of the internet it's just what he said - also includes things like Rickrolling, or certain pages, videos or gifs. When Kanye did his thing at the video awards or whatever, there was an instant flood of Kanye-interrupting memes.
