Chewykittens, that was a bad joke on my part. We will miss your contribution, and I hope you can come back before the 3 weeks are up. Also 3 weeks was just an arbitrary time limit, if anyone doesn't like it then it can change.

Cease the insecurities. This is the internet!

Also, is the game on the wiki?

EDIT: Nevermind, I've downloaded it and are on the playing it.

If you're supporting my writing, thanks for the gesture, but believe me I'm not fishing for encouragement or compliments. I can write well enough, and that post was a piece of garbage.

I should return to your article and just enjoy reading better writing :)

Finally got some real labor for the fortress; double my population in immigrants just arrived. Time to go nuts!

"Ustith, Uztizasit, Peasant cancels Drink: taken by Mood." *OOOooooo he will become useful!*
"Ustith, Uztizasit has been Possessed!" *Go to hell, RNG.

No - it was a critisizm for your apologies to Chewykitten. It does mean less competition.

However, thank you for the compliment to my writing.

So, the human traders are coming to town for the first time, you say? What's more, they have tons of items for sale? OOOooooh I have an idea! I am the cook, and I have just been ordered to make all these lavish meals out of valuable materials that were saved for the purpose. I should start hosting parties a week before the traders arrive, and by hosting one after another I can avoid preparing our trade items! I wonder if our Leader will try to replace me and watch some bumbling idiot ruin all (her) ingredients?

Hmm... Let's see. I enter dwarf fortress, and before the traders arrive, I've already made an impenetrable fortress. decent. Very decent.

Except for the amazing amount of boulders everywhere! So - the wagons go away. Great.

EDIT: Harpies came and killed my dogs!

EDIT2: The river now obeys my whims.

Start of second year... crash.

Could you just export the region files?

Man, not having this problem. Try using a clean version of DF? (never been modded or edited, even if it has been returned to normal)

The river, eh. A moat wouldn't be bad.
This map is a huge disappointment, no offense. It's just a huge smorgishborg of resources! Wonderful, great for fortress building; the only problem is that we were trying to have a survival game and we got plunked in a misnamed "Terrifying" paradise! Sure, if you blindly open the pool or pit wide open you'll be done for, and yes any dogs you bring with you tend to go off and attack the harpies and beak dogs (oops). Also, the map is not without danger. Granted, my dwarves beat the shiz out of some beak dogs and harpies, but dwarves don't swim and apparently harpies know this! Losing your miners and lumberjack along with their tools is the biggest handicap you can have. But in the end, there was never any real danger. I send my gatherers out unguarded daily with no casualties, and hunt to my heart's content.

There is still competition for what we can try to accomplish in 5 years! Clearing HFS would be a huge accomplishment, especially if you did it without drowning/trapping/atomsmashing them. Going to put a note up about NOT atomsmashing, though it should be obvious.

I finally get a replacement Mechanic (one of my miner's jobs) and he decides to get Possessed the first day, instead of ANY OTHER mood. Damnit! 1 mood per year, both possessed! Even if I get a couple of legendaries in year 3, there won't be enough time to do much with them!

I'm doing allright so far; only had a pair of hoary marmots on the map on embark, and nothing more dangerous showed up until after all my stockpiles were safely underground. Figures, since given the multiple spring wipes reported early in the thread I decided to ditch my anvil and go with some armor and bigger stockpiles of food, booze, and wood. I was able to buy an anvil from the fall caravan, no problem; bastards only had steel, though, so it was pricier than I wanted.

First year stats:
Created wealth: 42186 (4110 furniture, 25056 other, 10760 architecture, 2260 displayed)
No deaths, no kills.
No meals prepared yet, but that's going to change soon I think.

Breached both the pit and the pool, flooded an area in hopes of towercaps, trapped the entrance a little. Other than having my well flooded out by the winter rains and ending up with hunting dogs instead of wardogs on embark, I don't think I've screwed up too badly yet.

As of this date(end of first year) made wealth is:30,000
Things kill:
28 beak dogs
3 giant eagles
10 harpies
4 ogres
which makes me ask, anyone else lacking undead creatures, I thought that undead came in the Terrifying areas, which this is?

The DF Masters round 2 map had the same thing; I think there are two kinds of terrifying, one is undead and the other isn't. There should be some discussion about that in that thread.

maybe it depends on savagery?  High savagery + terrifying equals ogres
High Evil + low savagery= undead deer and the dreaded undead carp

Edit* oh and as of now, I have 80,000 wealth, 200 booze, 140 food (plump helmets mostly), 100 others (cooked meals), and 2 full sets of steel armor.
I also have a GIANT EAGLE!!!! SHIT YA!!!!, can't wait for the dungeon master, so I can tame that shit.

Well I seems to have it easy then. I saw 3 harpies, they are gone now, somewhere. I now have a terrible mountain goat and a Giant eagle... so nothing really dangerous around my fort.

I only lost one stray donkey and one stray puppy.

So after one year :

And you can see my progress here... I'm not really good at it.

Is this using only vanilla? Are we allowed to mod it if we only make things more difficult?
