Four years down, 1 to go. My FPS is getting pretty low, between mining operations and draining the pool. Last spring the pool beasties starting getting out and terrorizing the locals, killing a peasant or two, but I have almost no marksdwarves and had trouble working out how to get at the beasties. So I decided I might as well drain the pool into the pit, then scrub out the pool and refill it from the river after making some improvements. It's almost drained, down to 3/7 in the lowest level, so I might be able to get that project completed by the deadline.

Had a tense moment while clearing the pool. Two of my champions mixed it up with beasties at the water's edge and fell in. Luckily I was able to get miners to put in some steps down, which must've been enough to let them grab hold and escape. Unfortunately one was carrying her baby at the time, and the baby drowned.

Three dwarves had moods this year, yielding an earring, a scepter, and a microcline bed, plus one legendary stonecrafter. That gives me two legendary and 1 grand master stonecrafter, all pumping out knick-knacks for the tourist trade, if we get any.

A somewhat better year for caravans than the previous year. The elven and dwarf caravans both got through. The human caravan was almost all at the depot when the summer ambush attacked and every one of the humans ran for it. :/ So now I send out my military when it comes time for caravans. Even the fall siege was pretty easily handled by a couple champions with no casualties. There was also a steady stream of immigrants. The dungeonmaster showed up in the spring, and there were groups every season. I might get up to a county or better before the deadline; current population is 93. I've lost 9 dwarves and a baby, unfortunately.

Working steadily on walls and roads. Nowhere near as massive as the ones Tack(?) put up, those were impressive. Maybe during the coming year I can beef mine up a bit. They look anorexic at the moment.

Kills so far:
53 goblins (3 hammer,3 spear,3 cbow,19 wrestler,10 sword,2 mace,6 pike,2 lasher,5 thieves)
5 kobold thieves
7 cave swallowmen
7 antmen
6 lizardmen
6 snakemen, 1 named
5 olmmen
5 frogmen, 1 named
2 snailmen
12 harpy, 1 named
troll
giant cave swallow
6 naked mole dogs, 1 named
1 cave crocodile
1 giant olm
15 dark gnomes
11 beak dogs, 2 named
1 giant eagle
assorted livestock

I made it through year one; but barely.  My depot was not completed despite my best efforts by the time the caravan arrived.  I finally got it finished and was able to tade, but missed the wagons.  Luckily I still got some immigrants, 8 total.

There was a minor altercation with some harpies early on, but the first round of beak dogs passed me by without confrontation.  Unfortunately that was not to last.  The next wave of harpies dropped of my axe wielding WoodCutters into a murkypool and his death, down one axe and one experienced fighter really hurt my later encounters with the beakdogs.  Then his lover threw a tantrum and killed my expedition leader.  This of course caused her lover to go insane and melancholy on me.  There was a minor tantrum spiral...  All told  I lost 8 dwarves (5 from my original 7).

As soon as my new bookkeeper gets some appraise trained I'll post my current net worth (and of course give the date)

Kills:
4 Harpies (including one named)
7 Beak Dogs
1 Dark gnome
and 8 Mountian Goats (even though they don't really count)

Losses:
8 Dwarves
10 War Dogs
2 cats
1 puppy
1 kitten

Damn. Props for sticking with it! You didn't chicken out, quit, or whine when things went south!

I had a very similar problem with the harpies first year, losing miners/woodcutter and all tools. Now we know, don't F-ing fight harpies near water. Everyone looks great. Gong to do the updates now, as much as I'd rather brag about my own fort. I will do my best to update who is contending for what award as well as I can understand from reading. Anyone object to a Beast-tamer category? Not proposing this because I have captured and tamed a mega or anything, just think it would be a good award if anyone earns/pursues it. Not regretting the 5-year limit; this place's wildlife makes survival hardly challenging. 2 champions and a few marksdwarves are enough to keep everything under control, including the only sieges you tend to get around 2million wealth.

This game was as much a way of meeting players as anything else. If there is a demand for this we'll continue having survival challenges on much rougher maps, maybe a volcano map (the magma pipe on a chasm glitch) etc. There's a lot of fun stuff out there on the 'net.

It was a fun little challenge, I have never built a fort with a proper self destruct before. Though somewhere with skeletal horses or better next time may be a good plan.

This post will be a list of comments on each player: I will head them with players' names so if you don't care what I think about other people's forts and posts or even your own, you can skip as much as you like.

Karl, dropping? your fort looked promising. The file with the map upload is corrupted, you need to export the map to avoid crashes.

Zifnab: Welcome, will update you after writing this post. We're all a little disappointed in the wildlife, but maybe they'll drag a few of your critically important dwarves into the pools and make it interesting :)
Good job on the year 2, but you can't win the Merchantilism award like that, so I hope it's not your goal :)

Sarack: Will update your year 2, good jub clearing the pool but it looks like some of the others might have beaten you to it. Left the pit/pool pretty much alone, myself.

Linthar: looks like you're going for megaconstruction, maybe? Got a hell of a lot of competition from TQ! Too bad Tack's Jerusalem build went down, looked very interesting. FYI the competition for wealth doesn't count artifacts, as they are a matter of luck. If it comes down to whether a free/lucky 300k gets someone the award, it will be an important consideration.

TauQuebb: Wow, you're done. I'm on year 5, but my fps has slowed to a bit of a crawl. Would love to look at your upload, but will have to wait 'til I finish my own map so I'm not tempted to cheat off of what yours reveals. When it comes to the award vote, looks like you'll be up for megaconstruction, and you've already nabbed a "North Korea" award. Not sure where to post those, maybe on User pages on the Wiki?

Goron: will add you shortly. Let us know how you do?

Barconis' ideas and playstyle just sound awesome. Man, I was a little scared by your early economy, was afraid of not being able to catch back up to you :) However, the food industry just goes nuts after a while. You start out needing a lot of plots and multiple planters, then end up having extremely overproductive dwarves, and everyone is busy hauling their crap around (crippled me for a year straight, this was my first try at it). Yes, the cheese/maggot industry IS a pain and hardly worth it. Though, with meal production, and around 20 maggots, my fort could have over a mil increase in productivity for the year. Wasn't going for the food award, but the damn industry takes over if you're not careful. Unbalanced, in my opinion.
Looks like a race to the finish for the Merchantilism award! Sitting on 2,100,000☼ (maybe 1,900,000☼ without artifacts) less than halfway through year 4, and made 1,200,000 of it in the last two seasons. Of course someone could come along and shame us both, with a few lucky moods and great management.
Looks like you hit the immigration threshold in year 4, and got a legendary stonecrafter about when i did (my ass of a dwarf waited until he was a Grand Master before getting a mood!) Got some lucky early legendaries, eh? Hookin em up with a Marble stockpile boosts their production value x3. Didn't think of that myself until way late. Good luck!

Kelsa, will add you, again: absolutely loving and admiring your determination.

Kilikan: though dark gnomes and such are hardly a challenge, and not what the award was designed for (we were hoping it would be a challenge to kill each undead, heartless, rotting abomination one by one), your determination in pursuing this challenge and quick clearing of the pit/pool are impressive, at least to me. Definitely nominating you when we vote :)

If this sounds like some sort of critique, it is. But believe me, I know I'm not the best one here. Updating charts now, will take a while, and you won't be able to see it happening (except in stages).

Everyone has been added and updated; I realize that I missed some of the award updates (clearing pool/pit and times) but I'm tired, so an apology is all I have for you. Will run my updates in a serial storyline, quality, after it's over. A VERY interesting fort in some ways, a grainbasket for the mountainhome, tales of heroism, slaying of legendary beasts, heroic charges, lonely last stands... And in the end, one young unexpected hero! Meanwhile, as a teaser:

That is one epic roast. SWEET.
I reckon the dwarf who eats it will die of sheer awesomeness. He'll explode and shower everyone with !!dwarf chunk!!s.

By Wiki calculations, it would feed 7 dwarves on Legendary+5 food/thoughts for a year. So yes, if one dwarf ate it at a sitting he'd explode in glorious dwarf chunks!

@ The Architect

I did not really do a great deal of exploratory mining, only to find the pool and the Chasm, did not get time to look for the HFS. or bother with ore, what with the tone of magnetite just sat there

@ The Architect

I think I am going to try to take out the HFS.  Could be awesome, or could result in a dead fort. We will see.  Though currently early winter in year 3 I have gotten up to around 800,000 thanks to an adamantine fueled economy.

Nice. I just found it a little less than halfway through year 5, and probably won't be able to clear it before the time limit. Hauling is again ruining my economy, slowing everything to f-. There is always that stupid, stupid, stupid, STUPID legendary crafter who walks all the way to a mine whose entrance is outside the fort to make a 5 minute walk for stone that is 7 levels below him when a stockpile is 8 steps away, a clean walk. And this happens with dwarves of all professions while you are monitoring more important tasks...
And no one picks up the 15k mastercrafted roast stack that probably has 1000 in ingredients in it, so it rots, and causes the shop to work slower, because you can't prioritize "pick up the f-ing food" over "restock the shop I built for realism/atmosphere".

In addition, playing is getting to be a pain for fps, what with my waterfalls-in-the-dining halls, etc. Cat pathing doesn't help, and it is becoming painful just to move. After spending a while constructing my catsecution platform, turns out they only visit their owners once in the ass end of forever, meaning I just waste time I don't have tasking a valuable dwarf to stand at attention while I watch for his cat to come along. I get Scamps, the influence of Toady's personal love of cats on the game programming, etc, and sure I like cats, but these virtual ones make me want to go write a program for dwarves to stuff them in a bag and drop them down the well. I read news about cats of the future being able to be "playful, knocking things around" etc and just groan. I like free bones, but it's so not worth it.
Reading the updates section, some wonderful things there, very creative. But to be honest all I want is for squads to have some better commands (attack this creature, attack line of sight, attack range_x, retreat, and don't play follow the leader when he sleeps), the ability to put priority ratings on tasks, and for "dwarves stay inside" to really mean "dwarves stay inside" and not "dwarves stay underground", which should be a separate command. For me, it would then be a perfected, simple enough game. Of course everyone feels differently about the updates.
A pause-less mode where players could control the siege force against their friend, even with the current simplistic squad orders, would be ballin too.

Anyway, a 3-hour, laggy season after beginning the search, my legendary miners wander into the demon pit, right about where it was on that embark screen shot. Now what? 2 seasons to mine and smelt it all!

County, 11th Malachite, Year 5. Pre-adamantine industry, will probably have an adamantite king soon.

13th Galena, giant cave spider silk cloth anyone? No sign of the critter, and the laborers are keeping their mouths tightly shut about whence the thread came.

So, its 5th Timber and I gotta save :)

Right after construction of wall Dwarven caravan has arrived, with a long tail of gobbos. They doesnt attacked though, has gone somewhere. I traded all my crafts and some GCS silk wear for food and alcohol. Caravan guards helped get rid of dark gnomes (too bad they doesnt wear anything). Also, marksdwarfs tower is also ready, connected to fortress via underground route (old mined out area).

Migrants has arrived:
  • Stoneworker
  • Animal Caretaker
  • Armorer (good)
  • Craftsdwarf (good)
  • Fish Cleaner
  • Miller
  • Peasant
  • Child, Mule and Calf

They entered in corner of map separated by brook, but made through over ice.

So, created wealth is so far 14142 (not much, i know). Good qty of platinum, flux. Im digging deeper for more interesting stones.

Also reservoir is filled, and well is already built, so hopefully no thirst in this winter.
