Water depth in future version
« on: June 28, 2007, 06:09:00 pm »

In the dev notes it seems you haven't decided on how to represent water depth.  I think the tildas are the way to go here, and just take from what already is sort of used in the current release.

1 - One white tilda
2 - One light blue tilda
3 - two light blue tildas
4 - One medium blue tilda
5 - Two medium blue tildas
6 - One dark blue tilda
7 -  Two dark blue tildas

This will look much better I think, and people will be used to this from the cave overflows.  The magma could use a similar system with yellows and reds, maybe dark grey for the first to represent a slightly cooled leading lava edge.  Also with the numbers it makes you think of minesweeper, which is annoying.

The numbers are temporary, and can be replaced with tidles through a setting in the init.txt file; the statement Toady made about this is buried in the future of the fortress thread, so it was easy to miss.

*tidle
FYI, there is no light blue... Only 2 shades of teal.

Anyways, i think the list could be optimized a bit:
1 - Two teal tidles
2 - One blue tidle
3 - Two blue tidles
4 - One dark teal tidle
5 - Two dark teal tidles
6 - One dark blue tidle
7 - Two dark blue tidles

With each level alternating between the one above and/or below. So water level 2 alternates between two teal tidles, one blue tidle, and two blue tidles.

As well, white and grey can be reserved for the wave front (water level 2 and 3, when 'flowing')

[Also, considering Toady has also stated that there will be 'blood' 'oil' and 'slime' type fluids, so you have to make absolutely sure that colors are chosen well between all fluids... The last thing you want the player asking is "Lava, or blood?"]

You can't use single and double tildes for different water depths, as the water tiles are animated to alternate between single and double tildes to represent waves, remember?

Since when have waves defined the depth of water? A 10-meter pool of water on a windy day can have significantly more waves than a 100-meter one motionless in a cave or something.

Nono, what he's saying is, by definition, the waves are higher than the rest of the water, and thus, technically, deeper.  Not that deeper water has more waves.  Waves ARE deeper.  They're points where the water is deeper than the rest of the area.

This looks like a job for yet more init.txt options!

Maybe the next version will have a wider range of preset colors? That would be nice for water.
