I have a kettle. I live in Seattle.

But seriously, Americans don't have kettles? Who's the idiot who made that mass generalization?

"Americans don't have kettles."
"What? That's weird. How do you know?"
"I saw some American tourists once. And they didn't have a kettle."

A lot of American households have kettles. A lot don't, of course, but it's hardly rare.

And yeah, if you're just making a single cup of tea, microwaving the water works fine.

This is a ridiculous assumption. British people don't have left pantlegs.

I always find that microwaving water makes it never turn out as good of hot chocolate or tea or whatever. I use a kettle to heat it up and then a teapot if I'm making more than one cup.

It's true, we just paint our left legs black so it looks normal.

No, i was going by a friends quote from an internet page on how to make tea and stuff.

And the quote was "Heat the water to boiling, in whatever method best suits your fancy. In England they have special electric teapots that heat water in under a minute, super convenient. In the US, most people use a microwave. The old fashioned tea kettle on the stove works too, but can take a LOOOONG time! " - The Internet

I got the coolest electric kettle for Christmas last year. It's gotten a bit of iron in it from the well water (I've switched to 5 gallon jugs for it). I'm a big tea drinker. Most of my more . . . interesting . . . posts come from a few cups of tea at three in the morning. The really weird ones are from coffee.

I uhh... Well...
Well it's because I tend to set them on fire somehow...
You hooked a real keeper there.

But yeah, people can live without kettles. I have one, but I could easily forgo it for a pan and my odd skill at pouring exact measurements of liquids.

I like to make my Dad RAEG by copying the kettle sound when he's making tea.

If that means the oil tax, it's not helping anything...
