Let Dwarves make sand from rocks
« on: October 27, 2006, 05:45:00 pm »

Sand is just silica.

Many types of rock are high in Silica.

It'd be nice if we could make dwarves crush rocks (if you wanted to be accurate, they could ignore any type of rock that is not silica-based) up in the mason shop to make sand, because:

A) - Its a long way from the magma to the river (the distance that sand must currently travel to make glass with a magma glass furnace)

B) - It'd be nice to have another way to get rid of rocks.

The perfect use for the Justice system.  Convict labor turning big rock into little ones.

And if they commit a serious crime, like murder, you could use said small rocks to stone them.

I'm bumping this because it's still a good idea. It's gonna be tricky to make my glass Atlantis without any sand in the area...

Hello, 2006.

But yeah, it is a good idea.

Yeah, I'm all for sand production in masons shops. Or perhaps even have it created as a byproduct of normal masonry work.

Hahahahaha!  Man, I haven't thought about that for a loooong time...  Ah, the good old days.

Indeed, some way of creating sand would be nice.  It would also be nice to have sand treated differently than other soils, as it just looks and seems weird to have grass trampled down to find not soil, but sand underneath.  How do trees grow in sand?

Having it as a layer underneath a dirt layer of some sort (in non-desert biomes) would be fine by me, as it would fix the aesthetics problem.

But if we were to have sand created as a byproduct of masonry (something I don't particularly agree with), then we'd also need to get sawdust from carpenty.  Now, what would we be able to use sawdust for...   Any suggestions?

But as far as masonry = sand, I think the rock scrapings from stone projects would be a bit too big to qualify as sand.  A specific sand-grinding job should produce the fine grains required.

But then again, it's all getting melted anyways, so why not?

Sawdust is clearly used to pass off old, worn mechanisms as new ones.  :)

Alternatively you could try to recycle it into pressboard. Something like 4 sawdust = one wood block, for those who are really short on wood and need all they can get.

Hmm...masonry/mechanic byproducts get you sand. Carpentry byproducts get you crappy wood. A craftdwarf's byproducts would be whatever he was working on, so sand, sawdust, and bonemeal, though I really have no idea what you'd do with bonemeal. I suppose you could generate small metal nuggets at the forge, which could be re-smelted into bars at a smelter. Leftovers from the still would include dregs that would get you where you're going, though you wouldn't enjoy the ride...

This is all speculative and bloat, though, aside from the sand. Sand makes sense and has obvious utility.

because glass-quality sand comes from crystalline rocks that are worn down over long periods of time, you can't just grind up a piece of granite and get glass making sand.

How about for specific stones then, like say sandstone?

Well, the sawdust created as a result of normal productions in real life mills is often collected and sold in large quantaties. Then it's used to make particle board, or it is burned as a source of energy.

That being said, saw dust could be a source to make charcoal or ash.

Yes, but how did it get there?  Coconuts aren't native to deserts.
