I've installed Windows 7 on my pc, have yet to try DF on it (despite it being my turn in a succession game), we'll see how it goes.

I have heard that Windows 7's default opengl implementation isn't as fast as the older ones (software?) so that could be the reason. Someone with the problem should try playing with settings to see if it is the game side or graphics side of DF running slowly.

The windows default nivida drivers are in my opinion really crappy.

Go and download the entire exe from nivida.

I've noticed that on occasion, the NVIDIA driver installer fails with an error message that is maybe one or two words different from the "success" message for some inconceivable reason.
Maybe you just didn't notice that it didn't install properly?
