[40d] Windows seven
« on: October 05, 2009, 09:02:48 pm »

I just recently upgraded to windows 7 and the frame rate dropped from a consistent 30 fps (which is the maximum I set for the fps) to 10-7. Does anyone have any ideas? or want more information?

Thanks

Is Windows 7 bloatier than Vista? I don't know anything about it and intend to stick with XP until the infinite wisdom of The Intarwebs passes judgement, but if it is, then that certainly explains it.

Windows 7 is less bloaty than Vista, though it's still not going to get nearly as good performance as good ol' XP.

However unless you're really starved for RAM (running on a gig or less), you shouldn't see a massive performance drop in DF. Windows 7 is still pretty new so it'd be nice for windows 7 DFers to collate their experiences so we can have a good idea of the general problems (if any).

Have you tried (re)installing your graphics card drivers? Windows 7 comes with (as far as I recall) a crippled version of openGL - cooked up by MS with an obvious agenda. You might want to double check everything is okay driver-wise and then search more of the forums if it's not fixed.

FYI: if a company/product doesn't have Win7 drivers, grab the Vista driver.

Win7 is what Vista should have been, in all respects.  I've run into a mere 1 feature that I dislike (and I don't know if it started in Vista or not).

Anyway, I have no problems running DF on Win7, I think I actually got a speed boost from my XP install, though likely just because of 32 bit application support.

I installed the graphics driver from the Hp website and it works now. I'm getting around 100 fps on average but there is a flicker in the screen now and it no longer supports windowed play, the screen is just black. I'm going to try the driver off the nvidia site and see if that works any better.

Thanks

I confirm.
Same problem, 5-7 fps on windows 7, even on a clean embark. Even the opening menu is lagging.

I install the latest Nvidia drivers, and Tadaaaa! 37fps on my 130 dwarves fortress.

I have the same problem. I hope someone figures out a solution before the next release.

...installing the drivers for your graphics card? Just like the last two people in the thread did?

(I'm running 7, and have had no problems with DF. Except the complete annihilation of my fort, of course, but that's not 7-specific.)

Same problem. Win7 x64 bit.

I will try what Meckle did and hope for the best.

How do so many people forget to install their graphics drivers, an integral part of any computer for over ten years now?
It boggles the mind.

I think the issue is probably more that they forget to update them. A lot of vendors probably had really halfassed Vista/Win7/x64 drivers that have since gotten fixed. Or still do.

Because Windows comes with a default one that works.  People go "oh, I can see the desktop, I guess I don't need this disc that came with the video card" and completely forget the "but if it didn't work, how would I install what's on the disc?" issue.

It identifies the card correctly, it picks the right resolution, it draws fast enough in 2D that the full effects-laden desktop works perfectly smoothly. Also, Windows Update has long had actual 3D drivers for most cards available (not the most recent, but sufficient to make things *run*). So, I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to assume that since everything seems to work fine there is *some* version of the right driver installed, even if it isn't the latest. Win7 just manages to make do a lot better with generic display capabilities than you might expect :)

No, this is not the problem, since I installed the drivers before I even downloaded DF.
