So I did this with a human PLAY NOW to see how far I could get. No fast travel allowed.
It spawned me in a freezing dwarven town near the north pole, so I headed south-west to the nearest town which happened to be a human town conquered by elves.
En route I was half-freezing to death as I was naked and had no way of getting clothes, I repeatedly got the "You are Freezing!" and "You are Freezing Solid!" messages and took light brown moderately bruised damage to EVERYTHING, including internal organs and eyes, which shut my viewing radius to one square around me. I had gained toughness from throwing and sneaking so I had no issues with passing out or being winded.
Eventually I ate vermin and drank stagnant water all the way into town, healed everything except internal organs and got my eyesight back, and stole much needed waterskins, backpacks, clothes, weapons and armor from town... and then THIS happened
Adventurers can be stricken by melancholy.
I haven't worked out why yet, but when it happens you're always drowsy (i tried sleeping it off many times), your speed is killed, you get a flashing blue ! symbol over you like fortress mode, but you can still control your character.
When I walked next to a pond it automatically JUMPED ME IN and I drowned.
I know I did not jump into the pool as I would have had to alt enter it.
I had just exited a snowstorm when my adventurer was stricken by melancholy and when I walked up to a pond to refill my water bottle my legendary thrower and pretty well-off adventurer DROWNED herself.
