Im looking for a (specific) book
« on: October 05, 2009, 11:28:45 am »

OK, so I read this book a long time ago, and I want to read it again, but I cant remember the title, so I thought I'd ask you guys if you know what its called again.

It starts off introducing the futuristic society, with an AI, 'mother', who looks after everyone. One of the main characters is a guy with some muscular disease, who is cured by nanites wielded by another character, early on. Anyway, the government at the time realise that the population is falling way too low - humanity's down to about a million people, since most women only have one child, if that. So half of them decide to scrap all the tech, but the other half dont want to, so they have a massive war, which uses up all the energy anyway.

So theres all the commoners without any power, and they all head for the camps where people have been living more naturally, without reliance on Mother. The story then focusses on pretty much the only democratic society left - all the other settlements are seized by medieval warlord types.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? or should I post some more?

Huh?

I just remember reading it.  I have the book in my room if I remember correctly.  Somewhere buried under the multitudes of books.

Seing as your question has been answered, it is safe to derai this thread. :)

Your description reminded me of another book I read a while back...

about a group of vat-grown youngsters that are brought up by a computer in a sort of matrix environment, after the world has recovered from humanities deathtroes. Here humanity died off from a retrovirus fucking us up genetically.

ah, there it is: Idlewild by Nick Sagan.
