I dunno, if dwarves can fool the hummies into buying yet another stone mug....I just don't know what to say,

supply and demand system based on actual game stats maybe?

EDIT:  With the conquest option in the newest update this would provide the perfect reason to go to war...to create a monopoly on a certain good

You mean something like this -> (Notice it's the hated elephant, boatmurder would be proud)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I dunno...
They could probably get a lot of humans to buy them... Especially if they had access to a large enough proportion of the population.

I really would love to be able to use more metals as currency, currently I can't find any gold but I have Billion piling up. Is there a way I can mod this in til then?

And paper money is older than we think... I think China was using it quite early, though I'm not sure where I got that from.

As for Latinum in Star Trek, I think the fact that it can't be replicated makes sense- it may well have been considered worthless until they found it couldn't be replicated, and the Ferengi found it would make a perfect galactic currency. But I digress.

Latnum isn't the only form of currency in the Startrek universe. It is just much more readily available then any other form.

I mean you can't expect everyone to walk around with Dilithium Crystals or some of the other rare materials in that universe.

Anyhow as for valueless money I am aware it is pretty old. Shells for example (at least I assume shells)

Egyptians used chits for grain... Money that represents a store of value rather than being a store of value is old.

How would you determine when a civ is big and stable enough to support this, though?

There is ONE instance where I think Paper money makes perfect sense for Dwarves

You know how Dwarves wrack up debt before the economy starts?

That Debt could be represented basically by paper "IoU"s

These existed as far as I am aware... Though the question still remains with how Dwarves even get their hands on these... though I guess the Laison could bring them with him and give it to the Mayor to distribute.

I've always thought that the current leadership (first the appointed nobles, later the immigrant ones) keep these sorts of figures in their heads (although it would probably be the entire assemblage, given how loss of such nobles doesn't affect finances).

Given a certain amount of omniscience (unlike in Adventure Mode, a dwarf that is upset always knows how to get to the noble he seeks[1]) I suspect that (actual game mechanics aside) there's a group consciousness that handles such things, including instant knowledge of spending and earning habits, and the only thing that this is not good for is 1:1 talks over why Urist McHungry is feeling upset, which needs the reinforcement of a face-to-face meeting...

[1] How I wish I could zero-in on the local leader/whatever when I adventure.  Easy in human towns (the inn), difficult in mountainholmes (often somewhere in the lowest level), awkward in dark fortresses (not done that enough to work out if there's a pattern) and nigh-on impossible in elven retreats (for all I know, they're visiting their cousins in the second town down the road when I'm wandering around, getting all fuzzy over the magenta "E" that just turns out to be the Elf Trader...  again...  and burger-all-use for trading with, as well).

That's what negative gold is for.  Dwarves already have atom-smashers; making antimatter shouldn't be too difficult.

Accidentally destroying the universe is so dwarven.

On another note, I don't think most 'paper' money these days is actually paper; in Australia at least, banknotes are made form a sort of plastic fiber. Makes them hard to tear or rip.

From what I am aware of.. Paper doesn't need to be made out of paper.

Though I am probably mistaken.

No, he's 100% correct.  If paper needed to be made out of paper, from whence would the first paper have come?

Paper money however, at least in the US, is made from cotton, so dwarf paper money would probably be made at a clothier and would require a dye of any color as a reagent.

I know the thread is five pages long, but at least read the first post before making a response <_<;;  I appreciate the interest in my topic though! :)

Nobody gets semantic jokes anymore. He was talking about how "Paper doesn't need to be made out of paper" which is a contradiction.

And seriously, no love for taxes?
