Entrance corridor idea.
« on: October 05, 2009, 04:00:52 am »

I just thought of a way of making it so that you can make your fortress wagon accessible, have a trade depot inside, and, best of all, have firing corridors for Ballista bolts that will almost garunte killing stuff. Major disadvantage? Your main entrance can't be trapped beyond the ballistae, you'd need another corridor with traps in case the enemy gets past your ballista fire.

Basically, you make a 4 wide corridor. Then, you hook up 2 bridges, really long, and both only 2 spaces wide. Have them fold up in such a way that they'll form a 2 tile wide wall down the middle when you pull a single lever.

BOOM! You have two ballista firing corridors, without risks of a staggered ballista formation, and if you're feeling cheesy, you can just pull the lever and atomize those in the corridor to. Thoughts?

Hmmm... I have a fortress where I might want to use that.

Maybe even have a pair of pressure plate after the end of the bridges so if a goblin reaches the end it will automatically move the bridges and smash anything behind him?  It would let one goblin through but hopefully might catch everyone behind him.

Only to be tripped on a botched TrapAvoid check  :D

But it's a cool idea.

Are you saying the ballista corridors would only be 1 tile wide? That doesn't tend to work out well; the bolts inevitably hit the walls before getting far into the corridor, even with high-quality ballistae and well-trained operators.

Build three tiles wide.  Have nothing below.  Dig channels down the sides so it's a one tile causeway.  Put retracting bridges along the sides.  Use raising bridges for the last bit to stop balista bolts.  You can lay traps down the center, fire a ballista and have any missed bolts recovered by the side troughs.  After the siege you unlock the door to the collection room and recover the bolts.  Even without a ballista a narrowing corridor cuts your trap requirements by a third.

Yeah I do something quite similar the whole time, 3 tiles wide and ramps to take traders into the belly of the Dwarven city, the route guarded with wardogs galore and a balista teams and marks dwarves protect it too, but its handy for getting alot of crafts shifted fast,

Also Dwarven atom smashers? Oh yeah, can't have enough ;D
