Of course, Blade Runner has about 800 cuts available of the damn thing. I think a new one was actually released RECENTLY. The post-production of that movie was a goddamn fiasco.

Let me put it out there, not to offend anyone but people these days have no idea what a "good" movie is. They say movies like "The Hangover" are the best movies ever. To be "good" a movie must have interesting characters and a great story. Here is my list of movies that I think you should, or anyone on Bay 12 should see. These a pulled straight from my favorite movies list from facebook. You should be quick to notice many are Client Eastwood. Greatest actor of all time.

Bladerunner, Once Upon A Time In The West, The Last Samurai, The Good The Bad And The Ugly, Magnum Force, Return of the Dragon, A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, The Enforcer, Escape from Alcatraz, Sudden Impact, The Dead Pool. Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn Of The Dead (1979), Day Of The Dead, Land Of The Dead, Diary Of The Dead

ARTISTIC PRESCRIPTIVISM ALERT!!!

Seriously, though, a movie doesn't "need" anything except for the effect it has on you. There are films that hardly have characters or narrative at all.

And even though most movies do in fact have those, a lot don't really rely on it. There's a lot more to film than characters and story, or else it would be inseparable from literature, which *also* has more than that.

The "of the Dead" series somewhat annoys me, really...   Romero keeps getting lauded as an aficionado on zombies, but not only does he not keep his zombie mythos in line from one movie to another (acceptable), he also can't hold it together in a single movie (not acceptable).

They just don't make any sense.  It's sad.   I'd consider them rather cheap entertainment for when you can sit around with a couple buds and rip on them, but otherwise they're not particularly impressive films.  They do have some wonderful quotes from time to time, but the most hilarious thing is claiming that the movies have a plot.

Pulp Fiction
Fight Club
Rushmore
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
The Good the Bad and The Ugly

Of course it's highly subjective, but I would make the argument that these are all exceedingly awesome movies.

Pulp Fiction and Fight Club are really timeless epics of modern life.
THe Good The Bad And The Ugly was a masterpiece.

To be "good" a movie must have interesting characters and a great story.

While those are fairly basic and uncontroversial requirements, your examples weren't the ones I'd pick.  I mean, were the Dirty Harry sequels even trying to be more than exploitation films?  Not that those don't have their place, but...

I'd still call it controversial because film is a medium with enough characteristics to it that you can't single out any one or two and say "a film is great if this aspect is great" or even that a film needs them.

Granted, it might work for 90% of what's out there, but it's hardly any sort of rule.

Havent read the whole thread, but I feel the urge to say

GROSSE POINT BLANK

I LOVE it. It's a weird movie. Not very deep, not very ... important... but GREAT. Also, it has a bit of Dan Akroyd, which brings me to

BLUES BROTHERS! (blues brothers 2000 ... one of the worst movies ever)

and in case you havent seen it yet, THE ONE movie everybody should see before they die, is probably

FRITZ THE CAT!
