The final resting place of your dwarfs.
« on: October 04, 2009, 02:37:24 pm »

So, how do you lay your dorfs to rest? A huge pile of coffins? Small tombs for each dwarf?
Please share your ways of laying them to rest.
I shall start with showing a new design I tried out today:

Don't mind all the damn rocks laying on the floor ;D

Massive necropolis below my city. Tombs for specific dwarves if they're necessary, legendary (working on that one now), or otherwise I like them. No pet tombs, well, not many. Basically just a massive smoothed room filled to the brim with coffins. Corridors for my nobles.

Opulent tombs for choosen few. The rest go to magma, if I have any, or in garbage dump.

No one bothers cuz of this enormous engraved dining hall, see?.

I don't bury pets at all :D
But, I also make tombs for champions showing me excellent goblinslaying skills.

I train my masons up on coffins, so pets get them too. I've been doing glass forts recently, so I let the bones disappear before building the coffins to save on all the hauling. I normally replace a bed with a coffin every time a dwarf dies, preferably the one he was using. Lets me get a quick view of how much of my fort has perished :).

I generally just fill a room with coffins, maintaining enough of a gap between lines so the dead aren't being trampled. It's smoothed and engraved, and the rocks hauled out, or better still, turned into the coffins themselves.

I make a shitload of coffins at the start, then add more as I get more casualties. Pets get coffins too; there's no shortage of rocks. No shortage at all.
Useful nobles get a coffin in their room.

The main exception in my current fort is the queen and consort, who both have 1-tile tombs in the main dining hall, in artifact coffins.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

In my latest fortress, I found another site outside, dug down and duplicated my bedrooms (I use fractal designs) for a giant mausoleum. Somehow, it feels appropriately symmetrical :)

I just dump mine in hollowed-out metal veins, diagonally, with 1 tile open only on top, bottom, and sides.  Except for the nobles, who get gigantic rooms to compensate.  I usually don't have enough coffins for the dead, so many are already rotting by the time I get them to their grave.

I give all of my dwarves a 3x3 tomb with at least four statues, fully engraved, in my exploratory mine shafts. Yes, I spoil them.

I always feel responsible when my dwarfs die so I line my the proud halls with coffins.

Never forget.

I like lining the entryway and main halls of my fort with coffins in niches.  Having the trade caravans and new immigrants go past all the dead on their way in feels nice and dwarven to me.

I use the nearby magma pipe as a way to cremate my deceased.

I'm actually planning on making a giant field of coffins outside my fort >.> My fort's name is Agemourn after all, so why not make suitably EPIC Field of coffins and memorials ALL AROUND the place =3
