AoR-style strategy game ideas and discussion
« on: October 02, 2009, 05:50:39 pm »

So, I've been toying around with the idea of a strategy game, about since I looked at Age of Restoration. I'm thinking something along the lines of AoR, but I don't want to replicate it, and I need some kind of mechanic. Anyone willing to play or have ideas for mechanic and stuff?

People who might be willing to play:

In my opinion, there can never be enough AoR style games. Mostly because they keep dying off due to player laziness.

Maybe having fewer civilizations, but have sub-players within the cities? One side might have a king, a merchant guild leader, and a mercenary guild leader, while another has the king, a shipyard guild leader, and a mage guild leader. More RP opportunities, but probably a bit harder to balance and run.

Not to mention it would need considerably more players. At least nine, I figure; three leaders in three civs. On the other hand, having multiple people per civ makes it less likely any given civ will idle, although you'd need to have some way of deciding who gets to order what.

Yeah. I like the multi-person idea. It allows for more RP and activity. Once this gets going, someone could post a new civ, with stuff like AoR.

To deal with order priority, I'm thinking different leaders would have control over different aspects of the civ.

Just out of curiosity, I'm going to do a list of people possibly willing to play this, with the "multiple players per civ" idea. Setting would be fantasy with tech, based on course of game. Technology would range from primitive, with basic farming and using sharp sticks for weapons, to somewhere after the invention of gunpowder, but before guns are truly efficient. Magic is a possibility. If you are thinking about joining/willing to join, just post that you'd like to here.

One more bit of advice: Don't be lax on lateness.

Are the rules ready yet? There will probably be more interest when people know what they're getting into.

Not ready yet. I haven't had time to come up with a good scenario. I hope Vanigo doesn't mind if I rip off his "Great civilizations fall, now we are in a rebuilding period" idea...

Is it possible for AoR to become a tabletop RPG? I am thinking of creating some tabletop RPGs, and, well...
* Servant Corps shrugs.

Maybe GMs would be better suited to this sort of thing.

I'm looking into making an AoR variant for the IPhone. It could indeed be turned into a tabletop RPG.

I believe the GM of Brave New World (AoR clone) had some kind of program to do most of the work for him.
no clue what AoR is... but ill play!
Tip: Find out what it is first. It requires some effort on the players part.

Why not replicate AoR? Ok, not exactly, seeing as multiple players per civ means a rule change, but the system works, right? Why go to the effort of designing a whole new system when you have one that you know works?
