Why not just lock him in a room. If the dwarves can't path to the item they won't start a task on it.

Actually, it doesn't work that way... it's the marksdwarf who cancels the Store Item job.
No dwarf is ever tasked to carry the bolts he's holding to the stockpile. Rather, the marksdwarf needs a path to a valid bolt stockpile. If he doesn't, then he'll think "I gotta get to my post!" and drops the bolts. If he DOES, he thinks "I gotta get to my... Hm, these bolts really need to go to that stockpile. ... Hey, wait a minute! I'm a soldier! hauling is for civilians. I know! I'll store them in my Quiver of Holding!"

I modded in near-infinite bolts by accident. My improved dragon megabeast dropped a stack of far too many bones, and my crafter made them into ~2000 bolts without me noticing. I'd recently switched all my spinally injured champions to crossbows. One of them picked up this stack of bolts, staggered under their weight to the archery range, and leveled to high master marksdwarf from practically nothing.

This is an awesome discovery, sir.
But.. Does that over-1000 lbs quiver not slow the marksdwarf down a LOT?

Valid point, but if the dwarf is part of a battery it won't matter that much :)
Besides, normal haulers isn't slowed down that much by a 1000Γ object, so a marskdwarf (Probably trained in wrestling aswell?) who's most likely stronger, won't have a problem.

Actually, I found there's a much easier (and automated) way to fill up quivers, without having to watch your dwarves and cancel things at the right moment.  Simply make your archery range face a direction that the dwarf cannot shoot from, due to a wall or a channel.  For example:

Code: [Select]
=========

The = symbols are a wall, and the X's are archery targets.  If these ranges are set to shoot from top to bottom, your off-duty marksdwarves will pick up a stack of wooden or bone bolts to practice with, realize they can't actually practice, and then stick the bolts into their quivers.  They'll do this automatically, without any need for player intervention.

EDIT:  I should still say, for full disclosure's sake, that I play with a pretty heavily modified game, so I'm not 100% sure this will work in a vanilla game.  It should be pretty easy to test, though.

The backwards targets is confirmed on my fortress (modded with orcs, melting rocks, and a bunch of custom stuff, so I doubt we've got the same changes)

Now if only we could bug the dwarves to shoot a bolt per stack every round...

Urist McMarksdwarf shoots a *Kitten Bone Bolt*
Urist McMarksdwarf shoots a *Kitten Bone Bolt*
Urist McMarksdwarf shoots a *Carp Bone Bolt*
Urist McMarksdwarf shoots a *Kitten Bone Bolt*
Urist McMarksdwarf shoots a *Dog Bone Bolt*
Urist McMarksdwarf shoots a *Camel Bone Bolt*
Urist McMarksdwarf shoots a *Hoary Marmot Bone Bolt*
Goblin McSieger freaks the hell out!
The bolt rips the goblin's heart out!
The bolt tears the goblin's left ear off!
The bolt tears the goblin's right ear off!
The bolt pokes the goblin's left eye out!
The bolt pokes the goblin's right eye out!
The bolt hits the goblin's right leg! It is broken!
The bolt hits the goblin's right leg! It is mangled!
The bolt hits the goblin's right leg! It is lopped off!
...

The goblin has bled to death.

I just confirmed backwards targets words. So does my personal favorite, defining the room as a single square.
However, you DO still have to muck around with the stockpiles as usual. Meaning to get it to work, you still have to either micromanage, turn off item hauling for everybody, or have so dang many items that the bolts don't get hauled. I'll edit it in to reply #9.

I don't understand why you need to micromanage stockpiles or overwhelm your haulers with other jobs.
You said that the criterion for infinite bolt storage was having an available space in a bolt stockpile other than the one the dwarf got the bolts from. Why can't you just make two ammo stockpiles which are each large enough to hold more ammo than you actually have, and will therefore always have available space?

I just tested that.
Even if you have multiple stockpiles, it doesn't work - if the stockpile the bolts were taken from is still valid, he will drop the bolts, even if there's a different, closer stockpile available.
I'll edit that into the reply.

just thought of something! what if you have a room 3 tiles long like this
Code: [Select]
wwwww
wxaad
wwwww
w= wall x = archery target a = a single tile ammo pile d = door
one of the single tile ammo piles is used as a quantum dump for bolts, then you get the marksdwarf in and lock the door then unforbid all the the ammo.

Yeah, have you ever hauled a cage containing every animal in your fortress? He was moving like that towards the archery targets. But then once he was there, he was firing at a normal rate, so clearly weight isn't a factor in actual shooting.

Clever! I like it. I'll have to make use of this sometime.

O.o you just discovered that? So no one knew about it? I thought that this is a feature... so never bothered to check about it on forum :P

Oh well.

And I have my own method (of course, ammo stockpile required - somewhere):
Crafts workshop: Marksdwarf gets bolts here.
Target: M'dwarf practices, I turn duty on = sweet red announcement, +13 -horse bone bolts- in da quiver.

Really, no need for quantum stockpiles and precision button-pushing or other tricky things :P

My idea will work even if you have a lot of haulers because they will not be able to get to the pile so no assigning it a job
