To all animators and graphics designer
Out of curiousity. What is your depiction of dwarf?
Is it just another short grumpy man or perhaps a hobbit like creature or perhaps something that similar to real world sydrome, dwarfism

On that second one, it just looks kind of like a chubby average-height human next to a thin, tall human girl.  Not much distinguishing them from humans without humans present.

I am probably the only person but I like Alter the most.

Nop, you are not the only one.  ;) I also like Alter the most....however I still say that: 2D top-down > isometric in DF.

I used the Zelda tiles for sake of demonstration, then re-colored and rescaled them a little.
This is best option in my opinion.

Solifuge: I forgot the hauling frame, good call.
I was thinking that because of the horribly complicated combat, it would either have to be abandoned, or replaced with the steriotypically horribly toony dust cloud. though shooting could also have animations, despite the problems with reloading times. i.e. lack of.
Anyway, can you mock up some fortifications and smooth and rough walls with the fatwall tileset?
Wrestling... yes, it could never be properly animated. BUT I actually prefer reading the combat text. So an animation of a dude hitting another dude with his fist is quite enough for me. Separate animations for shooting is an important point I've missed though.

I'll certainly be making more mockups :)

YAY Mockups!

Maybe for combat we should just have the backand forth movement - plus the hitting animation if they have a weapon.

*blink*

But... they're short. and cute.

Also - what's with half elves having G's?
and what is a halfling?
And dwarves should be more top heavy.

My idea of dwarf is basically that, except with longer beard, and thinner. Not narrower in shoulders. just thinner. unless they're fat.
NOTE: Anyone else notice that all of the races are fit and sculpted except for the dwarf?
And who drew all of those? except most are likely to be screenshots.

and what is a halfling?

Halfings are copy right safe hobbits for the most part. What differianate them gnomes in general, is that they aren't innately magical. What separates them from dwarfs is that they don't live underground, or have foundness for gems, or metalsmithing.

No, I think that LOTR(the books) state halfling as another term for hobbit, maybe something about the old phrase, or from some geographic location. There is not diffrence in the intended meaning though.

there's still the fact t hat the books describe hobbits in general to like eating a lot, and all the main hobbit characters start out overweight (particularly frodo, who get's made fun of for this)

While I like the progress on isometric display, it is also a problem that isometric displays can't animate procedurally generated objects that may defy previously existing models.

Thus, I would suggest also 3d-ASCII, 3D versions of ASCII symbols that map completely to them and thus act as placeholders, preventing them from needing more animation.

Then, the isometric version of DF would be more easily moddable, though you'd have to tolerate dwarves walking up and slashing random Qs or Xs.

I doubt any modern computer game has 2D graphics drawn on paper. More like concept art for a game. In fact I'm pretty sure I've seen that style somewhere before in relation to a generic fantasy MMOG, but I don't know which.

One of my absolutely favorite games had great isometric display (apart from being unable to rotate the screen), Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.  It also had a good range of animations that were suited to turn-based gameplay.  For the unfamiliar, look here.

hrmm, past few months ive been working on a 3d version of DF.

Im completely remaking everything, partially cuz its a damn fun challenge and also i want to try to reach the xbox community.

I like the isometric viewpoint for DF-type game, but id want to reap the benifits of true 3d engine.  Lighting, camera rotate/zoom, 3d models rendered from any angle..etc.

Although i love 2d DF, as truly the best game out there... its such a hard sell to fellow gamers and younger generations.  The graphx puts most gamers off, so we need to find a way to bring DF into a modern day look and feel.

im gunna give it a shot!
