Let's Play Europa Universalis 3 I.N.(Random Map)
« on: October 01, 2009, 12:40:59 pm »

The year is 1399

Feudal Japan has done well the last few decades under Emperor Gokomatsu, expanding its claims both east and west.  To the East we have pushed back the Ming Empire and have control over the entire border territory.  In the West we have captured large portions of the Cantonese hinterlands while the Manchu Empire was distracted by the Timurid invasion.  It will be several decades before we can consider our gains secure and exert our will fully over them.

The Map

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As you can see Japan sits along an isthmus, bordering the Ming Empire to the East, and the Timurid Empire(a Khanate) to the West.  The provinces with grey lines through them are not yet considered 'Core' provinces of our kingdom, but are scheduled to become so within the next 30 years.  The non-core provinces to the West are all Cantonese culture with Confucianism religion.  Those to the East are all Chihan culture and also Confucian.  This dosen't sit well with our Shinto state religion which has a low tolerance for heathens.  The Eastern Provinces are also considered Core by the Ming as well as several other nations, which would allow them to more easily declare war against us.

The Northeast Border

Navy:
Right now we have 2 moderately sized fleets on the south side of the isthmus, each with about 7 galleys and 5 cogs(transports).  Explorers have told tales of encountering a massive mountains of ice when traveling south beyond this sea's charted waters.  We know a fair amount about the two continents we border, but have not yet found a passage to allow our navies to travel from the south to the north sides of our isthmus.  At this point we would be forced to build a navy from scratch in the north sea.  There are several uncolonized islands in the south sea, however we do not yet generate any colonists with which we could settle them.

Army:
We have 2 small armies.  One is a regiment of 1,000 longbowmen stationed in our capitol, Okinawa.  The second has a force of 4,000 longbowmen and 1,000 archer cavalry stationed in our recently captured territory to the West.

Military Screen
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We are at our support limit for Navy, but well under it for Military.  If we increase either we will raise our montly expenses, and if we build over our support limit we will also pay an additional monetary penalty

Government Screen
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We can currently adjust one slider one notch.

Economy Screen
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We can choose how to distribute our monthly economic activity as research into any of the techs or invest into stability in the country.  What we don't put into any of that will be spent minting money.  While this will increase the amount of money we generate each month it also adds to inflation, which largely irreversibly increases the cost of everything from research to buildings.  It is a balancing act of growth vs long term viability.

Overview
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We have a pretty substantial revolt risk in some of the border provinces, these provinces have a fairly strong nationalist movement that will take around 20 years in some cases to stamp out.  We have decent relations with the Ming to the East, and quite bad relations with the Timurid Empire to the West.  There are Chinese cultures to either side of us on both continents. The centers of each of the continents are a variety of Muslim nations, with Hindus on the far shores.

Why are all the EU3 ones Random Map?  :P

Seriously, though... I say move the slider towards Aristocracy, build up the army a bit with your now-cheaper cavalry, and what decisions are available?

I'm talking about the bronze colossus. It's supposed to be made entirely of bronze.
But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

Throw away the old rotten remains of the Shintoistic faith. Join up with the Religion of Confucianism, and embrace the Confucian Confusion.

Seriously, though... I say move the slider towards Aristocracy, build up the army a bit with your now-cheaper cavalry, and what decisions are available?

The national decisions are two buggy ones from the random map that don't actually do anything and are always available.  Potential decisions (that we currently don't have the centralization for) are http://www.paradoxian.org/eu3wiki/Court_of_wards_and_liveries and http://www.paradoxian.org/eu3wiki/Militia_act

There are also 2 available decisions in Dali (the west border core province) to hold yearly festivals (lowers revolt risk at cost of tax revenue) and to establish the march (significant tax revenue and manpower drop, slider move towards decentralization for greater defensiveness and lowered revolt risk.  This province currently has a revolt risk of about 1%

Throw away the old rotten remains of the Shintoistic faith. Join up with the Religion of Confucianism, and embrace the Confucian Confusion.

Just to make sure you know Shinto gives us:

National Tax Modifier: -20.0%
Yearly Missionaries: +0.20
Missionary Chance: +6.7%
Morale of Armies: +0.50
Tolerance of heathens: -1.00
Stability Cost: +15.00
Local Missionary Chance: -3.0%

Confucianism gives us:

National Tax Modifier: -50.0%
Yearly Missionaries: +0.20
Missionary Chance: +6.7%
Tolerance of heretics: +2.00
Stability Cost: +20.00

It would be a sizeable hit to tax revenue and the loss of a significant military bonus in order to gain greater tolerance towards heretics.

Your regions look huge, i'm concerned that you end up taking years to move stuff around. I remember trying to move my arctic Byzantines around and while the year was 1399 i was getting 1401 ETAs on moving sideways.

1399-1401

As reward for their tireless service Emperor Gokomatsu has granted the Aristocracy greater rights and privileges.  In return he expects families to send their brightest sons to serve in the officer corps, increasing our Military Tradition by 5.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The nobles responded to the Emperor's call and 4 new Cavalry regiments were organized from their offerings of men.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And none too soon.  News reached Okinawa of a revolt in the border province of Hanadan.  Local Qin nobles saw their release from the Ming Empire as an opportunity to reform their nation, and have organized a seige against the local garrison.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The newly formed army was dispatched including the 4 cavalry regiments and a column of infantry
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At the close of a several month long march to our borderlands our armies were dismayed to hear of the surrender of the Hanadan garrison just days before their arrival.  There was grumbling amongst the officers that the cavalry had been slowed while escorting the much slower infantry regiment.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Pressing onward our forces came upon the enemy still ransacking the city and met them in battle
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Although they were tactically outmaneuvered by a crafty Qin general, our training and discipline won the day. The bulk of the enemy retreated with a small contingent trapped inside the Handan fort.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Our regiment of infantry made itself useful by making quick work of the remaning defenders.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Having Handan back under our heel our army pursued the enemy along the borderlands on into the winter of 1400.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Foreign Matters:

The Mongol Khanate, the dark green provinces on the far side of the Timurid Empire proposed a noble marriage between our countries.  Seeing a potential ally for any coming wars with the Timurid Empire the Emperor accepted.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Domestic Matters:

A new mission:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Over the last year the emperor had met with several Confucian missionaries and was quite caught up in their double talk, but could find no politically feasible way to convert to Confucianism at this time.

Finacially the emperor maintained a no-inflation strategy refusing to mint easy money, instead relying on tax collections and trade profits.  Inflation has not risen, but our gains in the treasury are consumed by the cost of maintaining our larger army.

Lacking a flush of cash the Emperor has been unable to find the funds to pay the exorbinant salaries of any new court advisors.

Many merchants are lining up to beg the Emperor for the right to seek out foreign markets to exploit.

*********************************

The regions aren't too big at all, with travel between the largest being a few weeks to a month, which is pretty typical.  I couldn't find a way to convert the state religion to confucianism, we do have one core on a confucian province, i'm not sure if it is an event or a decision.
