I think clever is meant to mean raw capability, and intelligence is stuff you have learned.

Intelligence is learning, Cleverness is ingenuity.

More accurately, intelligence is both learning and reasoning ability. It shouldn't be confused with knowledge, even though it can also mean well-informed. Cleverness is ingenuity, like Mars said.

In my opinion...

Intelligent is the ability to add things, to spell things, etc. All those things that require you to learn to use them, and your ability to use those learned things.

Cleverness is the ability to take tools you are given and get results from them.  It's also the ability to find tools that others miss.  Think improvisation.

Ingenuity is all about finding tools and things to use, thinking outside the box, etc.  It overlaps with cleverness.

Reasoning ability is the ability to think logically, inside the box, to a conclusion.

An example of cleverness:

An example of reasoning and intelligence would be the ability to actually solve that.

I find that clever is more of a snarky thing. You can't learn it from a book, you're just naturally gifted at solving puzzles/lying/making people look stupid.

For example, my friend is intelligent because she reads and has a very wide assortment of knowledge.

I am clever, because whenever she gets mad at me about something I manage to change the subject and make her forget she was mad at me to begin with.

The problem is that a lot of words are left vague and we have also split them up into categories. Intelligence for example is a series of types. Wit is the same deal.

Wit is the speed in which you can think and come up with solutions. (Speed)

Intelligence is your ability to take in information and understand it. (Quality/Power)

Creativity is the ability to organise information further from convention. (Versatility)

Awareness determines how much information you take in at any one time. (Quantity)

Unlike intelligence which is split between a bunch of different types. Cleverness is a series of traits.

If we were speaking in different terms. Intelligence is raw material while Cleverness is a raw product.

Though even then... you probably could add more to my list. It is all just to emphasise that being Clever is a series of traits in the same way that being "Good at a Sport" recognises that you are good at more then one thing (You couldn't be a good soccor player if you could only kick but not run)

Yeah, Intelligence is having the book ways down and knowing facts and stuff. Being clever is doing things in unexpected or somewhat different ways.

I myself don't think I'm TOO intellegent, but I seem to trick and surprise people a lot. So I guess that makes me more clever.

Clever guys get laid.

Intelligent guys buy hand lotion.  ( too snarky? )

Clever and intelligent guys convince their wives they shouldn't combine finances, and that she should pay him rent and 1/2 utilities when she moves in. ( I swear to God a friend of mine does this.  He is my hero.  The sheer audacity is awesome.)

Guys who are neither run for congress.

I challenge the confident part, but otherweise agree. Also, there needs to be a distinction for common sense, another form of intelligence distinct from the rest.
