Preventing death by cold
« on: September 30, 2009, 10:56:24 pm »

So I wanted to embark on a *really cold* map for my dwarves, is there any way to keep em warm enough so they don't die the first few seconds out?

The only way I know of is digging down. One they are down underground, tempuatures become cozy, even if your only a screen below the surface.

I try that, but you see they die at the moment the game starts, like nature rolled a 20 on their skin and they burst open.

Oh. I don't think you can embark there in that case, since artifical heat has (from what I know of) not been implemented yet.

Yeah, its currently impossible to start on a map so cold that your dwarves die on embark.
Artificial heat's probably coming around the same time lighting/advanced flame is added.

I mean, the embarked smack da beside the freaking magma, if that isn't a heat generator I don't know what is.

You could try reclaiming.. Maybe the armor the soldiers wear protects enough from the cold..
If so.. Make miners with hunting labor enabled, so they don't lose the armor.

Wouldn't turning temperature off in the init file work? Or would they spontaneously die as soon as you turned it back on, like what happens with magma?

They would spontaniously die if they are still above ground, as long as they got underground before the temperature gets turned on again they will be fine. Install a door and lock it as soon as everything is inside.

Set them to ignore outside refuse, since a thief, caravan, or siege will have them running out and freezing for the most part, and don't expect any caravans if dwarves freeze to death right away.

The reclaiming may work too, leather armour could possibly keep them alive long enough to dig down.

Are you running any mods\using custom world parameters with a much lower minimum temperature? I've never had any troubles with my dwarfs freezing to death in vanilla, even in the extreme tundra\glaciers of the world.
If you do want to mod, I believe increasing the dwarfs [LAYERING] tag may help.

nah, I was in a purely vanilla map and game on a barren tundra that featured nothing but tundra terrain and a single, lonesome magma pipe. 4 of my seven dwarves died on embark, another went melancholy and jumped into the magma before I could do anything, the sixth guy went into a spontaneous tantrum from the previous five's deaths and killed the seventh before dying himself. it was all just so fast.

It may be noted that that is hilarious.
