If you make the pit deep enough, you can also use a bucket brigade to fill it with water and simply drown them.

Or you could just fill it with magma. That works too.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Only if they were Wild Animals - dead tame animals will never be butchered.

Kind of moot anyway since you can't cage/chain/pit (read: throw into an execution shaft) a tame animal.

Of course you can! That's exactly what I did. And you can assign tame animals to cages or chains. You can't pit pets, but I'm not sure about assigning them to cages or chains.

Of course you can! That's exactly what I did. And you can assign tame animals to cages or chains. You can't pit pets, but I'm not sure about assigning them to cages or chains.

Whoops, my mistake, I incorrectly interpreted tame as synonymous to a pet.
