Turnabout is fair play (HFS SPOILERS)
« on: September 28, 2009, 10:16:48 pm »

I opened the pits and my seven marksdwarves slaughtered all 30 spirits of fire with ease, though they managed to set 10 pieces of charcoal on fire. About 9 months later, after they finally burned out, I looked at what was left inside - lots of charcoal and ashes, tons of bones and skulls, a few corpses in cages (they seem to prevent things from rotting), and 3 pieces of elf meat (also inside a cage) - and did a mass d-b-c to reclaim them. As my dwarves rushed in to gather the items, I noticed that 3 of them were walking away with pieces of elf meat.

Their current task?

"Eat".

Is this awesome (Y/N)?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

It gets even better. One of the cages also contains a conveniently preserved elf skin. I fully intend to tan it, make it into crafts, and then sell said crafts to the Elves.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

I'm suddenly now wondering if it's at all possible for a moody leatherworker to produce an artifact leather statue...

This demands further testing.

First mood you get, use dwarf companion to mod it to use the elf skin and EVERYTHING that you have in your fort, including the dwarves themselves.

Almost as if by luck, one of my leatherworkers has been taken by a fey mood, and she's using both the elf leather and the human leather. However, no matter how many times I savescum, I can't get her to make any sort of furniture out of it, just bags, quivers, backpacks, shields/bucklers, and musical instruments (also clothes, until I edited the raws and removed the [LEATHER] tag from everything). She seems to like coffins, and an elf leather coffin would be even better than a statue, but she won't pick it and I'm getting impatient.

Keep trying dude, seriously it's worth it. Build it outside in a shrine, since furniture can't be stolen once it's built right? BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I would say that you just can't make furniture out of leather, but all bets are off with fey dwarves. I ended up with a dog bone bin, myself.
It just sits there, decorated with spikes of goblin bone, full of goblin clothing.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

After 50 attempts, I am still unable to get any sort of furniture, so I'm going to have to settle for something else. Which do you think is best - a buckler, shield, bag, backpack, quiver, or musical instrument (harp, flute, and trumpet are the only ones I've gotten, though piccolo and drum ought to be possible too)?

Make it into a quiver that holds a thousand wooden bolts.

Screw wood, try elf bone.
