How to make NOT wrestlers? ))
« on: September 28, 2009, 04:48:17 pm »

well, I had to train some military but every single recruit even after I order them to use axes becomes wrestler. I got two champions (wrestlers) so all my recruits seem to spar with these two guys and become wrestlers. Some recruits become axedwarves but only for a short time - afterwards the are wrestlers again : (((

how do I solve this ?

Doesn't really matter, if they don't have axes thats obvious, but wrestling is a VERY useful skill, as long as they train up their axe skill also it shouldn't be a problem. Just label them as axedwarf after they become champion

I beleive he's referring to custom professions. From the unit's profile (v to select the unit, p for preferences, then z to open the unit's profile) press 'y'. This will allow you to give your man a custom name and/or profession. (Profession is the title that appears after the name, e.g., "Urist Uristurist, Champion" has the profession "Champion." Giving the custom profession "Axekicker" would have that unit always display, in messages and menus, as "Urist Uristurist, Axekicker."

But whats the point? after they became wrestlers they stacked all the axes to stores. They wont use it anymore I suppose?
again the problem is when I make for instance, axedwarves, they come to barracks where champions spar. Champion wrestlers make them become from axedwarves to wrestlers very quick. they even give up axe training.

Even if it switches their weapon as a result of the change of profession, you can still assign axes back to them in the m -> w menu.

Edit: This is, however, on the assumption that they're reaching elite wrestler status under your notice and you're trying to switch them back via the (v)iew menu or something. My apologies if I missed the problem entirely.

Protip:

You should train all your military in wrestling to begin with as it helps improve sparring injury reduction.

The question is, are you trying to make all of them axedwarves or just some of them?  You might not have enough axes to go around or some aren't assigned to use them.  You could also put the champion wrestlers on duty so that they won't spar with the recruits anymore but wrestling skill never hurt anybody.  Actually it gouged their eyes out and broke every single bone in their body.

Additional pro-tip: give your sparring wrestlers shields to give them some 'free' experience and keep them from tearing the clothes off each other. (They bash each other around with the shields for minimal damage rather than using traditional wrestling moves. They still gain wrestling experience because shields, while usable as weapons, don't have a related weapon type. Could be considered an exploit/bug.)

Well, improvised weapons supposedly use Wrestling (UNARMED) skill, and Shields would count as improvised weapons.

I'm pretty sure my wrestlers use shields, and they still pull of clothes. The armor stays on though. (Funny that they could pull clothes through the platemail they're wearing).

In my experience, a wrestler will use a shield and like armor it won't get pulled off while sparring.  You should armor them up so that they train armor user, shield user, and wrestling at the same time.

Wrestlers with shields do seem to do nothing but shield bash in combat thought.  This isn't always a bad thing, especially when they are bashing things 20+ tiles.

I train my troops to champion at wrestler before I even let them pick up a sword. That's cause champion wrestlers can dodge arrows!

Usually, then some bastard manages to pierce the heart of your champion wearing masterwork steel plate and chain with god knows how much agility.

I prefer to use hammers. Damage is non-lethal usually (if armored well, silver weapon).

Hammers are also nice because crossbows use the hammer skill in melee.  Once you get them legendary with those you can give them crossbows so they won't spar anymore, and hand the silver hammers off to the next batch of trainees.  Then you have a bunch of legendary marksdwarves that are perfectly capable of beating up anything that's left over after they run out of bolts.
