Are some animals just incapable of breeding?

I've been playing a game with several species of animals modified to make them easy to obtain. Among them, I've made Giant Cave Spiders [COMMON_DOMESTIC] [PET]s and have embarked with a few.

To cut to the point:

My fortress's mandrills and elephants are breeding just fine, but I've yet to see a single GCS child. I have plenty of GCS of both genders.

My question is, are certain animals unable to breed, even when tamed?

Are you sure about that? GCS are [FEMALE]. They can't breed, and they don't have [CHILD] information either. So no children.

At least, last I checked the raws that was the case.

Well, where the gender normally appears for other animals they've had both symbols, so I never suspected.

Is it possible to modify their raws to make them capable of breeding without having to gen a new world?

If you remove [FEMALE] and add [CHILD] information, and order a few more from the caravan, they might be able to breed.

I'm playing with the May Green graphics pack compilation. Will I need to specify the Symbol for the GCS spawn?

No, they will have the parents symbol last I remember, or just a red S, whichever.
